A quilt is something quilted. It doesn't need to be pieced or patchwork to be a quilt. It does need to have two layers of cloth and some sort of stuffing between. Synthetic quilt batting is the easiest standard filling.

Tack the layers together and then quilt them with bold-but-tidy stitches. Glow-in-the-dark thread is also available for quilting. It's not more difficult to handle than regular quilting thread and the result, even on a dead-simple quilt can be memorable.

You could quilt the recipient's name with glow-in-the dark and the rest with plain thread, meandering, or just do the name in plain and all of the background with glow-in-the-dark.

If you can quilt your first quilt, you're ahead of many folk. :-) Next time you can consider a fancier method for the top, secure in the knowledge that you know you can "finish" it ... because you've already actually quilted something.

I think a really simple quilt top to do is one of strips. you can make the center any size you want by just sewing strips together and then add sashing and border. It also allows you to simply stitch in the ditch to quilt and bind and its done. It will give you some practice with colors as well.

This was something I had my granddaughter's start with.

depends on how experienced you are in the patchwork process.

If you are confident in piecing your work together then a quick easy quilt could be constructed with large squares of 6 1/2".

6 1/2 " squares come out sewn up as 6" squares.

whatever size quilt you want work out how many squares you need then add a border of 6 1/2 " all around .

Work on a colour theme using light & dark fabrics.

There's a good site called "scrapquilting" - google in scrapquilting and you will be amazed at what you will find.

Also another is "quiltownusa"

One of my favorites is a rail fence. It is very easy, put together in strips and goes together quickly. You can also drastically change the design simply by which way the blocks are placed. You can also do it with only two or three fabrics so it isn't overwhelming. Just type "rail fence quilt pattern" in your favorite search engine and you should get plenty of patterns.

I've got thousands of ideas, but most folks wouldn't classify them as easy.

This site has all sorts of blocks. The instructions are excellent.

9 patches are pretty simple and you can have some nice patterns depending on your color choices. And of course log cabin is a very popular block.

Personally, I love paper piecing and do all those complicated patterns that my friends say I'm crazy for doing.
