I personally HATE it, it is the most stupidest book EVER written, i only had to read the first page, not even to the second paragraph to literally throw it away, after throwing it away i picked it back up only because i have to read this stupid book for my honors English class, i have read books at a higher literate level and with more pages than this and i have never in my life been so un-entertained and lost in boredom, can someone please shoot the talentless fool who wrote this, i rather take the F+ than keep reading this crap, I'm sorry but this is the most gayest thing ever "there once was a hobbit whose house had a tunnel" wtf??

the "hobbit" by Tolkien,is an amazing book.you can find so many truths about the human weakness and there are so many life lessons, about friendship,tolerance,brave...the first chapter is not an action chapter.it describes you the facts and the place.while the story goes on,you will understand that hobbit is something more than a fantasy book for children.
so,read the book again,be more patient and keep in mind that even when Tolkien writes about sméagol and the ring, there's something more than this...

Well, I suppose you are entitled to your opinion. Personally I love that book, I first read it when I was around twelve and have re-read it several times since.
Perhaps fantasy fiction just isn't to your taste.
I'm sure you can find literary notes to help in your assessment/ assignment regarding this work if you run an online search.
I always think that it's a shame that book choices for students are so rigid, personally I hated the Jane Austen books I had to study but there you go - I shut up and put up and got A* which proves it's possible to work through your own likes and dislikes and fit the right answers in the right places.
Good luck anyway.

It is a childrens book. Keep it in perspective. It was written to entertain young children. Some people think you have to read The Hobbit to understand The Lord of The Rings. Not true, completely different type of story even though some characters are in both.

Funny answers. The book *does* start out slow, but definitely is not gay - no matter what your teacher tells you isn't really a cigar. Chapter One just gives you the background for the rest of the story.

Don't ever read any of the following absolutely fantastic works of literature - you're sure to hate them:

The Jungle Books
The Sword in the Stone
The Once and Future King
anything by Jules Verne
Mrs. Frisby and the Rats of NIMH
Dr. Doolittle

I'm glad someone else agrees with me. I read the first few pages and threw it away. I hate books where the characters have cutesy names.

This is one of those books that people are always telling you you should read. It's too bad you have to read it for your class.

Unfortunately, it is too late for me to shoot the talentless fool because he died about 25 years ago.

I have never read the book. There is an animated movie from the eighties. By the way when I think of the Hobbit, I just think about how creepy golem is. illck

You're in Honors English??? I don't think so! You can't even write grammatically, for goodness sakes. And you don't seem to know who wrote the book either...The Hobbit is one of the best books ever written and by one of the best authors of all time...think "The Lord of the Rings" and then maybe you'll be a tad bit smarter.

I agree with buffeeangel, did you even try to use proper English? Have you used articles in speaking, at any point? Or do you just really like the word "the" before an adjective? How about "I WOULD rather...". Please don't even me get started on the fact that your entire post is one huge run on sentence...

calm down son, its just a book.

sorry to hear. i thought the book was engaging. there are many life-lessons in the book, being courageous, not becoming consumed , perseverance, to name a few, its hard to believe the book was written for children.
