I ask as i remember years ago seeing all the protests on the news about animals being exported in cramped and cruel conditions on lorries to the continent.
I have in the past few weeks witnessed the same thing happening in Australia, with the animals being carted over long distaces, packed into the back of a truck like a tin of sardines & then to be put on a boat and shipped to other countries. I am amazed any humans are still practicing these cruel and barbaric ways. Does this still happen in the uk, and what can we do to stop this.

Live animal exports continue from UK to the Continent as of midnight last night when the EU lifted the ban on animal exports [dead or alive] during the recent UK outbreak of Foot and Mouth.

Not at the moment due to the Foot and Mouth outbreak in Surrey, but possibly from Mon or Tues of next week to EU. As for rest of the world the ban still applies until exporters renegotiate contracts with individual countries about lifting ban.

Animals that are being transported are subject to welfare guidelines in the UK meaning that if they are travelling long distances that they are provided adequate space to lie down, have adequate food and water.
I used to work at the local cattle market and if the buyer has to travel over 50km these rules apply and there is a limit on the animals he can buy and he must provide adequate extra transport if he wants to buy more.
There probably are people that break these rules and transport more than they should in terrible conditions but if they are caught by animal welfare officials at customs then they would be in serious trouble and would most probably lose their licence to transport animals accross the continent.

At the moment there are no live or dead animal exports because of the foot and mouth so all animal movements around or out of the UK are banned until further notice except on Special Licence.

Yes it is extremely cruel if people transport animals in disgusting conditions that is why these laws are in place but unfortunately some people do choose to ignore them.
