Your first step may be to express what the problem is so that others can help you.

The best way to fix a mistake,is to come clean about it.If someone got hurt because of your mistake fess up and pray they forgive you.Since it's haunting you,you have little choice but to bring it out in the open.Good luck.

You have two options: (1) own up to the mistake and try to make amends or (2) do nothing and learn to live with the reality.
I recommend the first option, but some people choose the second and do fine. It depends on how much you listen to your inner voice, you know?

Is the mistake something that will hurt someone??...If so you had better talk it over ..
Depending on what it was and to whom was it done..
It is hard for anyone to tell you what to do cause we don`t know if you did it to someone else or to yourself??????
We need more about this question......
Sorry to be unable to help at this time.......

What kind of a mistake? How do you expect to get help if you can't define it?Understand that people make mistakes and they move on but if you want to be bogged down, then it becomes your choice.Have you learned from your mistake?Has it brought about growth and change in your perspective?
Allow yourself to move on and amend the damage done in order to stop the haunting as you say.

when i was about 10 years old, i walked for 17 miles in the rain to the nearest shopping mall to buy my mom a book she really wanted for her birthday. i had been carrying all my change (i had no paper cash) in a sandwich baggie. when i got to the checkout counter in the store, (i was soaking wet) and i reached for my sandwich baggie to pay for the book, the baggie was empty. i started crying really loudly, and the man behind me said, "i will pay for the book. dont worry about it." well after that, he ended up giving me a ride back to my house. that man is my stepdad now.

I forgive you to, but to be absoved, you must admit to that mistake, which you haven't done. Apparently you are not going to disclose your mistake, so it is impossible to assist you.

talk about it with someone and absolve yourself.
Perhaps by talking about it you'll find out it wasn't as bad as you thought.
