if a friend or someone you know is keeping wild animals captive, and they really care about it, is it a sin or a good deed to set that animal free when they are not looking? Because the animal should be free, but the friend would be disappointed.

My head says its a sin;my heart says its a good deed.

Listening to the reasonable sins committed here,by askers
as well as answerers(!),for my sins id say that the friends
"disappointment" should come second to the captive wild
animals care.
And,as everyone should know,good-deeds are better than
sins.

In order to keep a wild animal safe, it is best that the animal be free. What if the animal had become domesticated and then gotten out and run away? The animal would have to re-learn its basic instincts for survival. Of course, this process does not usually take long, but time is precious in the wild. It is more beneficial to be self-sufficient in most environments.
Also, many animals get depressed and experience distress in much the same way as humans. Captivity is a much lesser desire than that of being free.

Some animals can live only in captivity, for example parrots. But if a wild animal is being kept in a cage and will be happier in the wilderness, then it's moral to release the animal despite what your friend wishes. Even better, is to try to convince the friend to release it.

Of course, I mean that it would be moral from the point of view of humanity, not from any particular religious point of view. Most religions are basically immoral.

No. Try to convince them that it is bad to keep them. If they really care about the animals, they might listen if you explain how unhappy the animals would be in captivity. Just releasing them will only make them more protective of the ones you couldn't help and jeopardizes your friendship.

I would never do that to a friend, first of all that animal could be hit by a car or chased after by a dog, so what makes you the one to decide on how this animal gets it, the dog, the car, or another animal, did you ever think that maybe the animals safe, warm, and well fed right where it is ??????????

an animal accustomed to captivity would be lost in the wild...
...literally and figuratively. reporting the violation would almost certainly lead to the euthanasia of the animals. taking something which does not belong to you makes you as morally reprehensible and the person you are planning to STEAL the animals from...so, as bad as i hate to admit it...MIND YOUR OWN BUSINESS.

Since most religious proscribe the killing of animals, you would be committing the sin. Most religions claim the right to kill animals. You would be in the wrong.

Unless you find your moral code elsewhere.

You must be talking about a bird... You shouldn't let it go because if the cage is now all it knows it will be killed in the outside world.
