Where are you? A local restaurant for me (Houston, Memorial area) might not be local for you. I have favorites on the west side, from "interior Mexican" food at Los Alamedas to "70s Tex-Mex" at La Fiesta. I've consumed from one side of town to the other, from north to south. Let us know.

Try:
Las Alamedas on I-10 near the Loop.
Tacos by Julio on Longpoint---a whole in the wall, but great tacos, Mexico City style.
They have the Tostada Siberia.
Spanish Flower on Main.
Enjoy!

Two favorite locals are Escalante and Guadalajara. They are actually owned by the same family, by two brothers who have a bit of different philosophy, so their food are similar but a bit different. They are located in various parts of town and offer a great menu of Tex Mex. They are great alternative to Pappasitos and offer consistent quality that some of the mom-and-pop (or mama-y-papa) Mexican restaurants can't offer.

RUCHI'S. So good, I've watched them turn into a chain from 1 restaurant 15 years ago. They're all over, now.
LOS RAMIREZ if you are ever in the Webster / Clear Lake area. It's on El Camino between Bay Area and Nasa !.

One of my all time fav's is named Tampico. It's over off Airline Dr. It's a mexican seafood place that is low on ambiance and high on taste. Don't be afraid of the area, they have guards in the parking lot.

depends on how much you want to spend =) if you want real mexican and do not mind the surroundings, taqueria del sol on broadway off of I-45, the wait is at least one hour but you will not be disappointed. that's a seen and be seen place too. good luck!
