The idea behind prayers, from a conservative protastant point of view, is that God always answers prayer. Sometimes he says, "no" to what we want; and sometimes he says, "Wait a while". But he always answers. I think you mean, why do they not always get what they ask for? In the New Testament, I think in the book of James, it says asking in faith that your prayer will be answered. You do not have because you do not ask. It also mentions, that you do not receive beacuse when you ask, you ask out of your own selfish desires and not according to God's will.

This means there are certain requirements to praying.

1. You have to know what God's will is in the situation.
2. You have to pray according to that will (plan) for the situation.
3. You have to ASK! You can not just hope that it takes care of itself.
4. You have to believe when you ask, otherwise, you are just mouthing words.

Most Christians do not pray according to this formula. The most common error is praying acording to their personal desires, NOT according to God's will.

With that said, there is a direct similarity with casting spells.

1. You have to know that magic works in accordance with the grand design.

2. Do not try to do a time-travel spell, because it won't work. That is not part of the grand design.

3. You have to set your intent on the outcome of the spell, keeping it in mind through the casting process. For example, a protection spell. Utilizing protective charms, chants, herbs, colors, oils, candles, etc. everything is focussed on the desired result.

4. You must believe that the spell will work. You are not concerned with HOW it works, or in what manner it is accomplished, but that it WILL accomplish your desired intent.

With all of this said, I can state with complete conviction, that I have personally witnessed and used sympathetic magic AS A CHRISTIAN MINISTER. For example, I have seen people anoint a handkercheif with special "onointing oil" , pray for God to send his healing power through it, and then it was delivered to a sick person. And often the person recovered.

I have known of ministers doing what pagans would call a house bannishing, by going to a home where there were problems and anointing everything with oil and rebuking (bannishing) the evil spirits who were present.

There are other examples which I could site as well, but it is enough to say that, if the above requirements are met, prayer and/or magic will work in any situation.

Magick must be scoffed at by those who believe they are devout Christians. It's been bred into them for centuries. Yet when a prayer goes unanswered, they seek the positive route.

An unanswered prayer: It is something that is not meant to be.
A spell that doesn't work: It is something that is not meant to be.

Everything happens for a reason. A prayer could go unanswered for many reasons such as the one stated above or there is a different path one must walk. The same can be said with magick. However, you have people who fear the unknown and must debunk or destroy logical answers.

What's even more ironic: Having a fear of the unknown and not truly knowing if God exists, yet still praying to him.

I'll be interested to see the difference in answer between categories.

Because western, Abrahamic society teaches people from a young age that magick is 'wrong' and 'devil worship' and all that blater. So when they finally get the guts up to study and try some energywork they try and do something ridiculous (like change the color of their eyes as that question the other day) and then when it doesn't work they go "see it's all a sham".

Later in life that same person might actually come to understand how closely related the two are.

Thank you Terry. I do enjoy a well thought question.
Magick for me does work most of the time. Positive thinking goes a long way in backing any magick workings.
To me, it does not matter what religion a person follows, so long as they are "true" to that religion and try to live by the Golden Rule. Even in that book called the Bible, they say that God helps those who "help themselves".
There is a little "magick" in all of us....More, in some of us. LOL

I scoff at both, although I'd tend to scoff more at someone that spells it Magick, but extra Ks are always a sure sign of Internet inanity.
