I've unplugged every device on the effected circuit and when I try to switch to the on position it immediately pops back to off.

EDIT: Would I still get a short even if nothing was on in any of the rooms that lost power?

Ouch! You either have a dead short, or a bad breaker. Check the recepticles on the line that is tripped. You may have smoked something on one of the recepticles and it is shorting out. If this is the case, you may see burned or charred material on the recepticle.

You can check to make sure the breaker is ok by removing the wire attached to it and then try to reset the breaker. If the breaker holds, you will have to check all the recepticles/appliances associated with that circuit by removing the covers and checking to make sure the hot wire is not touching the ground or neutral in those recepticles. Leave the wire off the breaker when you do this.

If you are uncomfortable doing this, call in a pro.

Good luck!

im an electrician i also had the same problem in my house what it turn out is the breaker was bad . the next thing is that ur not on a piggy back breaker .this is a breaker that has 2 breakers together or back to back but it is one unit . if that is the case remember to turn of the main when replaceing the breaker and remove the other wire that is attached to that piggy back . always use the same company that the panel is made like square d use there breaker or seimens use theres some breakers are screw in some are snap ins . most house panels are a 100amp this is very use full to know and never replace a 15 amp breaker with a 20 amp because it will take longer for that breaker to trip and more and likely cause a house fire .what will happen is the wires will heat up between the walls and u wont know till its to late . most houses are wired with 14 gauge wire but there is a few that have 12 gauge or more known as 14 wire or 12 wire i hope this helps if not please feel free to contact again or call a electrican out to fix the problem.
