that i want to see a dermatologist?
ive got bad acne, and nothing out there works long term. it works for maybe a month, then it stops working and my acne gets worse, ive used every product out there, and nothing works any more!
i also have a case of what i think is rosacea that i want to get taken care of before school starts.
how should i tell my parents, im 13 and im not much of a confrontational type.

Personally, I can't imaine why it would be a problem. If your parents have insurance your visit should be covered with the exception of the copay. If they don't have insurance then I can see the issue since these visits along with any prescription can be hundreds of dollars.
As someone who had acne as a teenager I can tell you though that they are going to ask you to use over-the- counter products and may possibly give you a prescription as well. My dermatoligist recommended a facial cleanser called cetaphil (the one with the blue label not the stronger one), He told my mother the same thing for her skin. Basically, it is a VERY gental cleanser that will gradually balance and even your skin. It takes about 2-3 weeks before you will even notice any change other than the fact that your skin may get worse before it gets better. All those harsh skin cleansers and acne creams you buy in the store actually worsen the cause of the acne and provide a quick fix that will not last.
If I were you I would go to my mother or father whoever is easier for you. Tell them that you feel self consious about your skin and it's condition. Tell them that since you have tried a lot of different over-the-counter treatments and have seen little to no result you would like to see a dermatologist. If the co pay for the insurance is high tell them that you would pay that part if they are worried about it... This will show them that you are really bothered by the problem and you are serious about getting treatment.
Good luck! I know it is hard to be 13 and I don't envy you, but it does get better!

shrugger's answer was good. I just want to add that I went to a dermatologist for acne when I was a teenager, and I don't think it really helped. There might not be anything you can do that will be effective. Your acne will probably clear up when you get older. Mine did. And in the meantime, all the other teenagers have acne too, so it's not that big a deal.
Plus, after a dermatologists sees you and gives you a prescription, a lot of times they make you come in again every month to renew the prescription. Frankly, I think it's a scam that they do just to make more money. It's not worth it.

I'd go to my mom and say "Mom I'm starting school soon and I've been dealing with this acne for so long now. I'd really like a more long term solution. I believe that seeing a dermatologist would help me manage my acne better and find a long term solution. Additionally, do you notice this? I think it might be rosacea and would like to get that taken care of as well. What do you think?"

Straight up tell them. My mom would bring me there in a heart beat if I had bad acne and nothing worked. Most insurance policy cover it as well...they should be supportive if they are normal parents. Your only 13, you don't want your acne to get out of hand, correct it now. The dermatologist may have to try different products to see what works for your skin.

Tell them what you just told us....and tell them you are embarrassed....tell them it's hard enough to have to speak to people and look them in the face, but try doing it when your feeling like all they can see is your acne....therefor, you just end up avoiding social contact as much as possible...But I will tell you, when I was that age and went to the dermatologist, they gave me tetracycline (which then gave me yeast infections) and topical stuff and none of them really worked that great....I know you don't want to hear it but through the years....Proactive (but try just using the cleanser) the toner, no matter how little I used, made my face a greasy mess.....Good Luck. It seems so embarrising now, but this too shall pass. P.S. Keep your pillow case clean, your hair clean and away from your face....and make it a point to drink more more more water. These things help.

Im a mother and he is only 8 so not dealing with this problem yet...but I do remember being a teen and dealing with acne. If yours is bad enough that you think about seeing a derm it probably needs to be checked out.
Maybe if you and your mom hang out much..like go up to her while she is putting on makeup ..getting ready for work in front of the mirror...kinda walk up and check yourself out and say.."mom...my face is not getting better and you know Ive tried everything...what do you think about me seeing a dermatologist before school starts?" Just ask her in a way that sounds like you are looking for her advice...I bet she will take you!
Good luck!!!
P.S.. If she doesnt go for the doc...have you tried the mary kay 3in1 cleanser and moisteriser? Of all the things Ive used..that skin care line has kept my face the clearest. Its made for women like in their 20's and older but it is awesome stuff..works really good.

Its not that hard, I'm sure your parents will understand! Rosacea isn't that bad, you may need to see a dermatologist! Also, Clinique has great acne prevention lotions! I am sure your parents would be glad to discuss it with you or maybe even a friend. Your parents will most likely not mind taking you to the dermatologist!!! GOOD LUCK!!!

I think you should start by asking your parents if they had acne when they were younger. If they say yes then that will probably make you more comfortable talkinng to them. Then you should talk to the parent you most feel comfortable talking with. Just say that you are frustrated with all the acne products not working and you need a permanant solution.

I srtongly recommend, bare minerals from QVC for your acne, then i also reccomend you using sulfur soap to cleanse your face at least twice a day, and 5%-10% benzel peroxide topical cream. The bare minerals is an all natural mineral make up that helps to cover flawlessly and many customers also say that it helps to clear up their skin. If this doesn't work, just explain to your parents how you feel about your acne. Approach them in a nice calm way, when they are relaxed. Good luck! Hope this helps!
