I WOULD SAY HAPPINESS BECAUSE ULTIMATELY THERE IS CERTAIN DEATH(NON-SURVIVAL) YOU CAN'T LIVE FOREVER,BUT YOU CAN MAKE CHOICES WHICH WILL AFFECT YOUR LEVEL OF HAPPINESS.

I think the level of importance for each is varied. Some people live their whole lives without any threat against their survival or their way of life, while others are brought into a life where survival is a day-to-day struggle. Obviously, survival is more important to those who have to fight for it. Happiness, on the other hand, is a state of mind, and those who reach it will hold onto it dearly, even if their survival is threatened. They cannot imagine a life without happiness, causing survival to become the secondary importance.

Candide is a book about how optimism creates a problem in this world. Hard Optimism is non-fiction about how to live a happier life. Between the two I have done a lot of soul searching and sacrificing about this topic. Survival is something we do or control. I think happiness is something we choose. I think I am hardwired to survive, but I need to choose to practise happiness. A clearer way to say it is to try hard to be happy. And to use your wits to survive. Hopefully we can all spend most of our time working towards happiness.

Most people over-exaggerate their survival needs. In North America, our survival is rarely at risk. Our own personal fears and anxieties as well those which are fed through the media only heighten survival mode.
Anyone who perceives survival as an issue will not experience happiness.

Are the dead happy? Is it possible to find happiness when you are struggling to survive? It has been my experience that some security is required before any happy thoughts can happen.

Survival. What's the point of being happy if you aren't even ALIVE?
The way I see it is like this. You COULD eat 500 pounds of chocolate and get sick, and you would be happy. But you would only be happy for the moment, and you might harm yourself permanetly (sp?). The happiness wouldn't last very long, would it?

What is the point in living if it is just to survive? Survival in psychology terms is a "hygiene factor", meaning this is required to live. Once all hygiene factors are met, you can climb further up the Maslow scale to ultimately reach self-actualization (ultimate happiness).

You can't be happy if you don't survive, but you can survive and not be happy, so seems to me that happyness is dependent on survival......unless you are suicidal, then happiness is NOT surviving.
