I know how you feel! I always freak out when my daughter has a fever. I took her to the doctor when she was 5 months with a fever of 102.9 but they told me it was just a spike because she had a cold and it would go back down shortly. I honestly wouldn't tell you what to do. I am always nervous when my daughter is sick. The rule of thumb is if you really feel like something is wrong then take him to the doctor!

102.5 is not a high fever.
In a child more than 6 months old, anything under 105 (barring other worrisome symptoms) can be safely observed and treated at home, at least until the morning, when you can see your regular doctor.
Do all the regular self-care measures: dress your little guy in light layers. Strip him down when he's too hot, and add a layer when he's chilled. Put him in a few inches of warm water in the bathtub, and make sure you wet his head and chest. (Just don't induce shivering, as that will make things worse.) Offer lots and lots of liquids of all sorts. And if you're really concerned or your child seems really uncomfortable, you can give both Tylenol and Motrin at the same time, and then alternate them every three hours.
Fever is actually a good thing. It means your child's immune system is fighting off the virus (probably) that's infected him.
And fever itself is just a symptom. Your child's behavior is a much better, more important factor in whether or not you should worry. Is he lethargic? Does he eat? Drink? Is he peeing and pooping? Does he play? Does he cry? If so, what does it sound like? Any vomiting or diarrhea? Any rash? Anything seem to hurt? Your pediatrician is going to be much more interested in these things than the fever itself.
(Our oldest spikes high fevers at the drop of a hat. And she gets febrile seizures. So we know the drill...)
You definitely want to keep a child with a fever out of the emergency room if at all possible. His immune system is already working overtime, and the ER is full of every possible bug out there.

Keep hydrated. Push fluids this will likely aid. Pedialite or any fresh beverages to hold him cool. Do you observe any tugging of the ears? It might be an ear illness. Or It might be that he's teething. FEVER IS NOT ALWAY BAD!!!! Is some way that our our bodies combat off micro organism or any malicious program that can be making us unwell. Bacteria can not are living in top temperatures. Fever end up harmful in the event that they get too top, bigger that a hundred and one.five. Yeah the bacterias is demise and so will our mind cells or neurons, that 's why a few youngsters have seizures. If you think you have got to take your baby again to the Dr. Do it!!!! Is fine to be unsuitable than too overdue. Infection is most commonly the primary signal of illness, so if the health care provider prescribed an antibiotic supply it for your child. This can even aid the frame combat again. The fevers won't leave over night time. Remember that is the frame's possess safeguard in opposition to the illness. Give all of the antibiotic till completed, very fundamental. I wish this is helping.

Motrin will give you 6 hours. Our doc would recommend giving tylenol also afte 3 hours on the motrin. Then you give the motrin again 3 hours later. That way a med never wears off and the fever doesnt spike back up. If you have some kind of ask a nurse, er/urgent care nurse you can call, they could be reassuring. Also motrin is ibuprofen and tylenol is acetaminophin (sp?) . Never give extra of the same medicine.
Id keep a monitor on, and if you can checkin around the 5 1/2 hour mark if he doesnt wake up and fuss before that.
Good luck and hope he feels better soon.

He should be fine. I took my son in for a 102.5 fever 2 weeks ago, and the doctor said just do the motrin. Actually he said not to even give him any unless it was at 101 ish, or he was uncomfortable. He is the same age as your son.
