Snails will not eat bacteria, but they will eat algae. You don't need to add snails until you can see some algae in the tank, or at least until you have fish in the tank and it's cycled and stable. Here's some information about cycling your tank without the possibility of harming or killing fish:

Hope that helps!

It also depends on the type of snail. Apple and mystery snails can grow to be very large and require a mate of the opposite gender to even make babies. The babies may eat algae but the adults usually do not.

You need to read up on cycling and about different kinds of snails.
www.applesnail.net is a good start for the snail research.

Um.. have you ever had fish before? I doubt it, because if you did, you wouldn't be saying that snails eat bacteria. I wouldn't buy any snails.. BEFORE PUTTING FISH IN THE TANK MAKE SURE ITS CYCLED....

Give your take 2-3 weeks tops to cycle through<--what i mean is allow it to collect algae before you send snails in or they will have no food.
