360 = 2L + 2W (the perimeter of the yard)
360 = 2L + 140
2L = 220 and L = 110
So the total area of the yard is (70)(110) = 7700
Area of the pool = (20)(35) = 700
Subtract the two: 7700 - 700 = 7000 square feet

OK this is not bad:
draw out 2 rectangles (one inside the other)
put ur dimensions of your pool on the inner rectangle.
OK so you know the perimeter of the backyard is 360 with a width of 70ft. The equation for the perimeter of a rectangle is (2w +2l) where w = width and l = length.
to get the length you just sub into that equation:
P = 2l + 2w
360 = 2l + 2w
2l = 360 - 2w
2l = 360 - 2(70)
2l = 220
l = 110
You can find the area of the pool, since they give you its dimensions. Now you can also find the area of the backyard.
To answer the question, area not including pool:
A(rectangle) - A(pool) = A without pool
(110x70) - (35x20) = A
