Well when your habit gets to the point where its so bad that its causing you physical pain you should see a doc/therapist. When you feel the urge to snap, avert your mind by popping gum or writing or something else you like to do. Push comes to shove, just sit on your hand.

Habitual knuckle poppers did show signs of other types of damage, including soft tissue damage to the joint capsule and a decrease in grip strength. This damage is most likely a result of the rapid, repeated stretching of the ligaments surrounding the joint.

Also a possibility - Tendinitis.

Tendinitis in the wrist, hand, and fingers can occur from overuse or repeated motions. Symptoms may include pain, tenderness, minor swelling, and limited motion. Tendinitis pain in the wrist may spread down to the fingers or up to the elbow. Tendinitis in the fingers may affect one or more fingers at the same time. You may feel pain constantly or only with certain movements. The area around the tendon may be tender. You may even notice a cracking sound or odd feeling when you bend or flex the finger or wrist.

What's actually cracking when you crack your knuckles?

You probably need to have the Dr. look at your finger. You
don't want to let it go. It could get knotty at the joint if you
don't get some help now. When I was 14 I played soft ball.
A ball hit my middle finger and I let it go and now it swells
and hurts sometimes. The Dr. told me arthritis has set in there
now.

i have the same problem but its my middle toe. i accidently kicked the wall. now everytime i wiggle my toe it cracks. i think its dislocated i jammed it pretty good. my advice is go to the doctor...i should make an appointment myself. why don't you try using a splint on your finger instead of using your other finger cause it doesn't keep it straight at all times. good luck.
