Carter wrote: "I said that I had long taught lessons from the Hebrew Scriptures and that a common historical pattern was that Israel was punished whenever the leaders turned away from devout worship of God. I asked if she was concerned about the secular nature of her Labor government."

Now how in the HELL do you infer that he HATES Israel from reading that?

Does it bring your sad, pathetic life, happiness to attack someone who is your intellectual superior?

No. He hates Israel because he's an idiot.

The man has NEVER met a terrorist or dictator he didn't like. Does ANY1 still think that peace in the Middle East is being held up by Israels' intransigence?
Yes, I believe it's true that when God wants to punish (discipline) a people (nation), He gives them unjust leaders.
Who can say King George?

No. It's about Israels occupation of Palestinian land.

So it seems to be said. He thinks that Israel should not occupy Palestinian land, and that it is a major issue stopping peace in the Middle East.

Secularism has nothing to do with it.

I'm not Jimmy Carter though, you'd have to ask him, as I can't put words into his mouth, that is just my interpretation of what I've read.

I think Jimmy Carter being a Christian would innately be friendly towards the Jews, but just because he is friendly towards the old testament doesn't mean that he needs to alienate the Palestinians, who are being oppressed and manipulated by Israel. It is a complex situation, but it isn't left at that point. As far as Jimmy Carter is concerned I think that the issue is that, he thinks Palestinians should be a sovereign entity that isn't occupied by Israel.

If you look at biblical maps you can see that Gaza for instance doesn't appear to be part of Israel.

I don't think Carter hates Israel at all. Whether Isreal has been "punished" I don't know, but if he believes that's what happens, that's certainly his prerogative. Of course, his beliefs are based in Southern Baptist notions, and that may be part of what THEY believe; you'd have to ask them that, as I'm Jewish, myself. It would have been good for you to mention the person to whom he was speaking in your quote; without the appropriate context, it's a little hard to tell WHAT he means, but I've never seen ANY evidence that Carter hates Israel, especially given the fact that he helped broker the peace between Israel and Egypt (remember Sadat?? Or are you too young?) years ago. I remember it, and I think Carter is a man of good intentions, at the least, who tries to do good things, and that's all I can ask of a person.

No, he said he hates Israel 'cause it is an "apartheid state". He might be right, the guy was our former president, and led the country in crucial moments. Although, not with grace, and all that other stuff.

No, I think it's because Jimmy Carter is an idiot! His presidency was a disaster so he is still trying to write his "legacy." But as usual he's wrong and on the wrong side of history.....

So if he would have said "people are punished for turning away from the devout worship of God", would that have made it alright?
Maybe we should just ignore anything that Isreal does wrong for fear of appearing to be jew hating nazis?

I don't know. Frankly I think he's getting a little...well, he's getting old. Even very intelligent old folks say stupid things. Carter's a decent guy, he's just really off his nut where Isreal's concerned.

No it's because he knows that Israel army/Govt. treats the Palestinians with their apartheid practices that helps fuel the fire of every major terrorist organization in the Mideast & puts Israel's greatest ally (the US) in harms way.

If you can read try reading his book: "Palestine: Peace Not Apartheid". It's on the NY Times bestseller list.
