It depends on where you live. Some states require a permit to purchase any type of firearm. Some states only require a permit to purchase handguns. Check your attorney generals web site and see if they have the requirements there.

As stated it depends on what state you live in. If you will go to the NRA's website you will find links to each state's official web pages that has a summary of the current gun laws.
Where I live no such permit is needed to purchase a pistol, rifle or shotgun. However there is a 3 day waiting period unless you are a concealed carry permit holder. Then, so long as ou pass the NICS check, you may purchase the firearm. Nothing else is needed.
Yet some states think that without giving you a cavity search you are should not be eligible to exercise that right.

If you're talking about a handgun, you do in New York state and several others as well. In some cities you have to have a permit to buy a long gun as well.

Yes you do.
You need an FID card for small rifles, and air rifles.
You need a pistol permit for handguns.
To carry them you need a seperate license to carry them unless transporting them to a range and then the clip must be seperate from the gun and visible.

There are Federal laws related to firearms; and, most 50 states have individual state laws on buying firearms.
some counties and cities have their own laws.
