HOSTEL, definitely! If the weather is warm and you have the equipment, maybe camping, but I wouldn't want to backpack around with camping gear. Hostels aren't too much more (and some are really cheap - like in some countries in Eastern Europe, where the average price is about ten euro!) and are infinitely more comfortable.
In some countries (especially ones like Albania and Belarus, which don't get much tourism), you may need to stay in a hotel due to the sheer lack of hostels. Some could be quite affordable, though. And in some countries, like Norway, you're screwed either way. (The cheapest hostel in Oslo is forty euro a night!)
Another option, especially in Eastern Europe, is the homestay - you pay a small amount (usually 10 - 15 euro a night) to stay with a local family who've volunteered to host people. Not just cheap, but you could meet some lovely people and get an authentic feel for life in that country, too!

I have gone backpacking around Europe a few times and I stayed in cheap hostels and that was ok. I'd do the same again, but I think I'd skip the shabbiest ones from now on and pay a little more for a bit cleaner hostels.

I'm with the hostel. I've done hostel and hotel in Europe. Hostels are cheaper and more friendly. Camping? No, the ground is hard all over the world!

I stayed in a hostel - great fun, new people to share stories with every night, and sometimes impromptu music sessions. When I go next, it will be a hostel again !!!!
p.s. that particular hostel cost 11 euro a night. Hotels more than twice as dear.

Ya, $40 a day is fine just for food and non-extensive transportation (the metro). Maybe you should check out EF College Break. Its a discounted student travel thing, and its what I use. Its an 18-26 thing though. The prices are packaged, so it includes round trip airfare, hotels, breakfasts, entrances to select attractions and other stuff. I recently booked a trip through them, so I have the discount code I used, its hesseln1188 and it gets you $50 off. Good luck, and have fun in europe! P.s, please take more than 40 a day, i think that only applies to seasoned travelers, and does not include airfare or transportation. It would be terrible to run out of money early and have to sleep on the streets.

Depends on how much you want to spend. I would rather stay in a hotel, but if you want to save $$, hostels do have niceties like indoor plumbing etc that you may not get in campgrounds.

I would go backpacking and stay in a hostel, so I'll be in downtown, close to everything and saving money to spend visiting another country too

I'd go with the flow. I'm not likely to be backpacking across Europe by myself. I'd much rather have companions, so it would depend upon what my companions wanted.
