He used to be a beautiful shade of blinding bright green and now he has a brown tint. Is he going to shed his skin soon or does his diet make him a different color? Also sometimes when I pick him up he goes into the snake equivalent of an alligator death roll and freaks me out! I mean he's all over the place. Is there a better time to handle him to get him tame? Like after a meal, at night, first thing in the morning??

They just called a smooth green snake, L. Vernalis I think is the scientific name (sorry don't know how to spell the "L" part. I was able to actually remove him from the cage and walk around the house with him and he was content. But other times he's crazy. I do try to handle each day just picking him up in the cage so I don't panic when he panics, and drop him in my house! He was likely young when I found him a few weeks ago as he has grown some but looks to be about full sized now.

These snakes aren't for beginners. They do not respond well to handling, have very specific dietary needs & are fragile. It might be getting ready to shed & also, make sure the inside of the cage/tank is dry. They don't do well in constantly damp conditions.

What species is it? Some are calmer by nature than others. Some snakes change color a bit as they get older. Usually the color gets dull or whitish before shedding, and the eyes look bluish. Gentle daily handling is best. Snakes shouldn't be handled for 48 hours after feeding, as they can throw up. They need time to digest. Hopefully you have his tank set up properly with the correct hides, substrate, heating, and water source. Try to find out what kind of snake you have and look up his care info here:

If you got it from the wild or a pet store, I'd say it was a garter snake that changes colour as it grows and isn't a very tame breed of snake, if you got it from the wild, return it.

The color change is indicative of poor health.
Green snakes are difficult to keep; you should release it where you found it, before it dies.
