I have a dreamcatcher over my bed, I've had it since I was highschool, but it's not capturing the bad dreams anymore. I've been getting nightmares every day of the week. What do I do?

Yes, dream catchers can get full and they do need to be cleaned/purified now and then.
This is how it is done, using the elements.

Take it outside, lightly mist it with water (like a spray bottle on fine mist) , purified water is best.

Then wave it around you in a circle so that air flows through it.

Light a candle and blow it out. pass the dream catcher over the smoke. (not the flame.)

Sprinkle it with salt (yes, table salt will work.)

While you do each of these, think in your mind that which you want to accomplish...a cleaned and purified dream catcher.
with each element say : I purify you with water....I purify you with air...and so on.
Rehang and sweet sleeping ahead.

Yes, this does work and I have been purifying my dream catchers for years this way.

How To Clean Dream Catchers

What I do, is find an object, that is very spiritual for you. Something that you believe has almost a spirit, itself. Then you hold it, or if it is large, get close to it, and focus on your dream catcher and emptying it of all bad memories, dreams and spirits. If it works, the object should be slightly warm. Hope it helps[:

It most likely needs to be recharged with positive energy. It probably absorbed too much negative over the years. They can only store so much you know. You will need to do what I do when that happens. First go in to a room that has alot of space, make a big O with some salt, put a pillow in the middal of the salt, then take you dream catcher, and sit on the pillow. Hold the Dream catcher in your hands and ONLY think about positive stuff. Keep doing that for about 1 or 2 hours. Then it should be back to normal. good luck and God bless,. Latter=)

Dreams are not a steady flow. They are attracted by a clean Dream Catcher with feathers in reasonable condition. As you may know, bad dreams that are seeking come to be caught in the spiral web and burned away by the Sun's rays. The good dreams may come at very different times. Both may skip several days. However, when a good dream arrives, but is not needed because your sleep is already kind and gentle, the good dream climbs into the feathers where it can stay safe for future use.

The web can be gently wiped with a clean cloth. The feathers can be steamed and cleansed, or, sometimes replaced.

If you add Totem animals to the web, this can also help.

the web catches bad/unimportant dreams and allows the good/important dreams to come through the middle and slide down the feather into the sleeper's head. Bad dreams are malicious in intent, or simply unimportant fleeting images. Bad dreams may be very disturbing, but still have a very important message for the dreamer, so that the dream catcher doesn't necessarily get rid of bad dreams in the sense of nightmares, but bad dreams in the sense of distracting dreams that have no significance or meaning to the dreamer.

I realize it is an unusual response but let me actually attempt to answer your question.

I would say at least two things are possible.

I agree that perhaps too much negative energy could be a possibility. In this case I would suggest using Sage to cleanse/purify the dream catcher. You could also use holy water or any other ritual that fits your belief system.

It may also be possible that you dreams are attempting to tell you something (via your subconscious) and the dreams are being let through because you believe they need to be let through. In this case I would examine your dreams and try to see if they might be trying to tell you something. I think there may be common dream interpretations like the dream that your are teeth fall out being an indicator that you grind your teeth at night but I think most dream interpretation has to be done by the individual having them.

As for the other poster questioning if dream catchers work if they are part of your belief system then they work just as effectively as any placebo works which has been well established in the field of medicine.

Pleasant Dreams,

Because a dream catcher is nothing but a folklore myth used to sell cheap souvenirs to tourists?

Should have gotten one with a lifetime warrenty. Seriously, it may need to be recharged with positive energy. Probably absorbed too much negative over the years. They can only store so much.
