My home in Plano, TX faces south. I have a large area to work with and would like to have a cheap and low maintenance front (flowerbeds). I would like to do mainly shrubs and perennials. Heat and drought tolerant also very important.

Texas Bluebells, Black-Eyed-Susans, Mexican Petunias are some of my favorite in my drought-resistant borders. Ornamental grasses with their flower plumes are pretty, something like a Pampas grass... Boxwood shrubs are good too.

putting in native plants is the best way to go. Because they've evolved with that area so long, as soon as they become established they take care of themselves.
Sorry, I only know about California natives, but there are TONS of resources out there.
good luck!
