Before diet pills and anti-depressants? Hmm, interesting question.
I think that the time you mentioned was a time in America, where most jobs involved some sort of physical activity. Even clerks, secretaries and office workers whose jobs were basically sedentary, had to get off their butts and walk to the filing cabinet, walk to the coffee shop, go out for lunch, or a pack of smokes.
A lot of factory and foundry jobs involved very strenuous activity, and even walking from your car to the plant was some exercise.
During this same era, a lot of states still had an agriculture based economy, and farming is still a very physically demanding job, even with all the science and technology available today.
So,just the lifestyles available seem to have kept most people's weight down in a normal range.
About the depression, I figure that the same gene pools were around, so the rates of depression must have been about what they are today. I guess that the difference was, that life is hard, everyone has bad periods of life, but back then, communities were more close-knit, families stayed intact, people didn't move all over the country as they do today. So people generally had a pretty good support system, even if it was just the folks down at the local pub.
I'm interested to see the other answers!
Thanks for a good question!

Well they didn't go bungee jumping.
They were chubby and that was that. No one told Aunt Bee she must have been abused as a child and was turning to food. It wasn't in style for women to be as thin as the insurance companies want them to be now. Men have never cared as much as long as they were happy, but they have higher metabolisms anyway.
Recently a film critic complained about the 'overweight' chorus girls Busby Berkley used in his musicals. Of course they were just normal weight, but our eye has be changed to reflect unrealistic proportions and make those new stick women the new acceptable.
Few women are naturally that thin, for some its an ever spiraling lose, gain, lose situation.
People do more damage to themselves when they are young by engaging in sports or dangerous behaviors, like driving drunk or on the phone or drugged. Being fat will cause you to lose on average, three months at the end of your life, not in the early, that is up till you are forty years of age.
No one lives forever, and some don't choose to live on diet pills.
Now wouldn't it be nice if we could all just accept our differences without needing to put the other person down?
At the turn of the century that so called healthy man had a average lifespan of 47.

Why are you so prejuduce against fat people? This is a free country and we should be able to eat what we want.
Curves are beatiful but liebrals want to ban all kinds of fat and make fun of peaple that dont' look like barbie.
I dont now anything about calories but I now that if peaple where eating 6000 calories a day a hundred years ago we must not eat that much at all in America.

Along with putting a good number of our young, attention deficit, misbehaving rug rats on drugs - I seriously wonder what percentage of these drugs are necessary and what percentage are merely aggressive marketing by the pharmaceutical companies.
"Ask your doctor if ( ) is right for you" seems to be the phrase that follows an ever increasing number of commercials for everything from discolored toe nails to cancer. We don't even need to know if we have an ailment anymore - the commercials will tell us when we're in desperate need of some new fangled cure.

Lets use the turn of the century from 19th to 20th century. The average daily caloric intake was around 6,000 calories and the populace was generally overall healthy. Today the recommended daily caloric intake is around 2,000 calories and people are fat. The people were leaner. Why pray tell. because people went about on 2 legs and not 4 wheels. Walking 10 miles which is unheard of today was common in those years.

I don't know. But I'm something like 40 pounds overweight and happy. (If you think that 150 pounds is where I should be...? Ehhh...no. I'm something like 207 right now--through a steady diet and exercise. But it's been a long slog.)
I would like to be something like 180 to 185 though. But losing weight isn't an exact science.
That much I do know.
PS: It's nice to see you again! It's been awhile since you last asked a question.

They dealt with their depressions and they didn't get so obsessed about being a bit overweight. We are getting too crazy about health and being overweight. It's become a point that people are concidered fat if they weigh 3 pounds over what is the weight that someone thinks they should weigh. That causes the depression that causes them to need the antidepression pills. If we weren't so crazy about our weight we wouldn't be so depressed. Sort of circular logic.

They had jobs with companies that still respected America and its workers. Crime wasn't as bad, and you could live on one paycheck. All the fake sugars weren't in everything...McDonalds was the only fast food and computers didn't exist. So, people weren't fat and the stress level was much lower.

Before they didn't have the govt. poisoning their food with steroids and hormones that makes them fat so they ate normal meat products. Now they need pills to keep from being diabetic and fat to help balance the poisons we digest.
