Your first name? or your surname? or both?
I've changed my surname twice now. It's awfully good fun and just the most smashing fun that you can have - legally. In a lot of other countries it's illegal.
You could always keep your original name in the middle somewhere, to keep your mother happy.

I think you will do whatever you damn well please. I know of someone who changed her name to "Princess Toothfairy." We can take her mother's reaction to that two ways. 1. She hates it. 2. Glad her daughter is no longer using her surname, so maybe people don't realize they are related. So, perhaps your mother might actually fall into the 2nd category cited here. Wondering why you are considering doing it?
