I've noticed that Britons use the term feet square, to mean the two dimensions of a rectangle are multiplied. So it may refer to your term, footage squared.

Square footage should mean the result of the above calculation, the total square feet contained in the rectangle.

Nothing really. If you have a rectangle that's 2 feet on either side you can say its 4 square feet or 4 feet squared.

12in x 12in is a square foot and take 12 x12 and divide by 3.14
