It stems from a superstition that the number 13 is unlucky. It is interesting to note that in Korea, most buildings skip the fourth floor. That is because the Korean words for fourth floor is Sa Chil...which can also mean death. So we are not alone in this crazy, superstitious world.

Most of the hotels do not have a 13th floor... some of the newer hotels also do not have a 4th or an rooms that begin or would be on the "40-49th" floors.... is is bad luck also. I know when I was working at the Wynn, that Asian culture believe that is bad luck to be in a room that begins with a 4. Just a little interesting fact that I have come across while working in some of the hotels in Las Vegas.

I noticed that too! I've never been in a hotel with a 13th floor, and sometimes other floors are missing (the Grand Hyatt in NYC is missing half the floors!). I live in a high rise dorm, and we have a 13th floor.
I'm pretty sure it's a money issue... because of superstition not many people would want to book a room on the 13th floor.

I've never stayed in a hotel with a 13th floor and I've stayed at several. We stayed at a hotel this past weekend that only had 13 floors and the elevator buttons went 11-12-14.

Yes, many hotels outside of the United States do have a 13th floor. I have also stayed at a few mid range places that have ha 13th floors in obscure places here in the states.

I think it is the simple fact that people will not book a room on the 13th floor, why would a hotel build a floor they can't rent out? And what the hell kind of scientific proof could possibly prove that bad luck exists?

It's not just hotels. Most office buildings don't have a 13th floor also.

No. I think it is a standard thing to skip 13th floor for any of the guests - or staff - who might be superstitious

this is an old / ill-conceived practice in the building industry.
i have always noticed it, BUT have actually been in buildings that do have a 13th floor. i should have noted them in my journal. but i didn't, so can not inform you here.
i was born at 7:30am on friday the 13th, so i always notice things along these lines.
