I read over on the USA board that Seniors was a little shy of questions over here, so popped in to ask one.
A lot of Americans I know consider GB as the mother country. We might squabble and carry on a bit, but we'll usually side with you when the going gets rough.

Hope I helped streach the UK SC board a bit. I'll let y'all pick the best answer.
Thanks!

I have visited the US of A quite a bit, and am due to again in October, and I have always found the people great fun and polite. I also love the food, and shopping is fab. The one big mistake that you made though was electing Dubya into office!!! What happened? Were you having an off day in your collective consciousness? Never mind. All things will pass and I'll see y'all in a few weeks

Hi dwa. Thanks for popping across that big pond and dropping in with a q.
To answer you I have to sadly admit I've never been to the States and don't know that much except what I've read in the press and seen on tv.
I've corresponded with a few since I've been on ya and if they are anything to go by, you must all be great. Though I expect it's the same as here in the uk, there is good and bad in all of us.
I know brits keep saying the usa is a nation of obese people, and the yanks say the brits have bad teeth!!! Don't know where those ideas come from, but I don't believe them myself.
I know that during the war my husband says the yanks used to throw the kids sticks of gum from the back of the army trucks as they passed his house, and the kids were happy about that!
So I don't suppose you are a bad bunch, just wish you understood our sense of humour a bit more! lol x

OK HI There is no difference is there, between us I mean...I speak to Americans on various sites and have relations in Texas and find people in general are much the same.. We have the same problems in life, the same things that give us happiness, especially families, The differences are minor... The names of the shops, spelling and meanings of some words, these are all trivial. The differences are things that are not the province of us as individuals, they are the political things played upon by the media.. A lot of the perceived differences comes from the utterances of biased politicians that do not reflect the thoughts of us as individuals... Us older people might be a bit more tolerant and welcoming than the youngsters I don't know.. Just be friends OK Best wishes.

I am friends with a good many Americans. I quite enjoy my conversations and letters with them...they are real people just like me. Oh, they might have a few slight cultural differences but those don't count.

I appreciate that Americans feel the need to be patriotic. I am Canadian and a fierce patriot myself. What I can't stand is how large groups of Americans have to "put down" the people from other nations, as if they were second class and barely human. I respect the right of a Frenchman to be fiercely French. As I do an Iranian to be fiercely Irani. They are different from me and I can appreciate those differences. A large group of Americans don't seem to be able to say the same thing.

Americans do not "own" the world. Nor are they "responsible for policing it". People who live in other nations have a right to govern themselves in a way that THEY choose.

You guys already have enough problems of your own to handle right there at home. Maybe the administrators of your country need to be reminded of that.

LOL!

OMG you're so brave asking that question to a load of britishers!!! :-D

If you can get hold of any British comedy such as Mock The Week (podcast maybe?) then it will become clear that the general consensus here is that we don't actually want to be seen to be siding with the USA. Certainly not while President Gump is on the throne at any rate.

Apart from that, and one rather loud and unnecessary breakfast incident in an otherwise peaceful Austrian B&B about 10 years ago, you're not so bad.

Stop sending us unannounced advert breaks, junk food regimes, gun crime and cop movies ... and we'll apologise for sending you Victoria Beckham.

I've visited the States half a dozen times and love it.
The folk are very courteous compared to UK (except maybe in Chicago).
I never feel uncomfortable or out of place in any situation the yanks are very generous in spirit.
I've even gone to church in Houston which I enjoyed, (something I never do in Old Europe .. they worship death over here).
In fact I think most Europeans are ignorant of the wonderful spiritual heritage America has bequeathed to the rest of the world (not that I'm particularly religious, unlike Americans).
Yup .. i like America and Americans.
Got to remember though .. for them that are interested in such .. that USA is not a democracy, it is a capitalist economy which is very different.

I am a Senior, and have visited your Country many times over the past forty years. I have been all over your Beautiful Country, and every State is so different with its own type of people. To me they are the best, and I have made lots of friends, in my travels. I have always found you very friendly, generous, more than they are in my own Country. I hope to come again in the near future. Don,t believe what they say about you, because they do not know you well enough, and apart from a few dopey Politicians just like we have over here...you are great...

Haven't had the pleasure of meeting any of you, you sometimes appear to feel a little over the top. As long as you don't go on about the wars, I think we're a little sore that we didn't do as well as we could of done. No I couldn't possibly let you have it, you seem like a nice guy. See my other answers on the squabbles if you really want to know.

I don't really like being called
a "yank". I consider myself an
American.
I don't consider Britain to be
our "mother country". We are
a melting pot of every nationality now. We owe no
allegiance to any other country but the good old USofA.
But I also love England.
I love the people, I love the
special interest in making
yards beautiful. I'm a regular
on BBC Yorkshire and love
how the old has been replaced with wonderful new
buildings BUT the older
bldgs are beautiful also. I had
hoped to visit one day, but I'm
getting too old now.

There are good and bad polite and rude. I have met some of them in New York and Los Angeles and the surrounding areas, Mostly they are helpful generous and kindly. They do have some different ideas from us Brits but that is no bad thing. Sometimes we just have to agree to disagree the same as you might do with a personal friend
