Starting bid doesn't mean it will sell for that. It's just a starting point. Most items that sell, sell for much more than the starting bid.

It's also possible for the seller to put a reserve on an item, which means that unless the bid gets up to a certain amount (and the bidders don't know what that is) it isn't sold.
