I think Nixon did the 'right' thing in resigning and Ford was prudent in pardoning him. Those actions brought the scandal to a close, and limitted the damage done to the Presidency.

The point that the history books don't address very well was that Mr Nixon was roundly disliked on a personal basis. He was widely perceived as quite competent, especially in foreign affairs, but he was creepy and everyone knew it. He was thought to be a racist and anti-Semite, and pretty much like Karl Rove when it came to getting elected.

So although everyone wanted to avoid a trial of a former president on Constitutional and other grounds, nobody had much sympathy for Nixon and his weird cadre. Ford was in trouble no matter what he did, and he knew it, as did everyone else.

Ford has answered this question in the past. His feeling was a long, drawn-trial would only exacerbate the raw, open wound Watergate had opened in the country. He also said he was not expecting the amount or intensity of angry reaction to the decision, but he was pretty sure his decision would cost him the next election.

At the time, I felt very angry about his decision. Over time, I've come to appreciate Ford's strategy and sacrifice.

Ultimately, he did the right thing, because America needed to put Watergate behind her. It was an embarrassing scandal, and we had to move on. Jerry would have been persona non grata in the Republican party if he hadn't done it, but probably hurt what little chance he had at election by doing it. Either way, his life in the short run was gonna suck. . . .
