For us humans, I think it is the same as it is for a lot of other species here on earth. It is the desire to make more of our own kind. The purpose for our existence here is to make little Raes and Lady Morganas and everyone else.
Sure there is love and laughter and our spiritual paths. But we don't exist in a vacuum, and neither did our parents and neither do our kids. It is all part of the circle of our lives, and we can't escape from it. It is our destiny and our purpose according to Mother Nature. She IS the world, and that is what makes HER go round.

Inertia causes our revolution; as in one day to continue.
It was started by centrifugal force as the mass of the Earth collected to into one planet or star.
Gravity causes our orbit, as in around the sun.
When the earth first formed it was a collection of hot gases and dust, the product of past novas and supernovas. As the gas and dust gathered in clumps it was attracted by the force of gravity to form stars and planets. The original collapse induced a rotation and that rotation has continued ever since. It has gotten slower over the years, thanks to the moon. The dinosaurs may have had a 25 hour day not a 24 hour day.
The same force that pulls the water down the toilet is what created the rotation of the Earth. The gravity formed in the center of the mass and sucked all the other mass in to finally evolve into the planet Earth. The original rotation is a product of that original compaction.
An orbit caused by gravity is when the object falls into the sun, the earth is falling at such a speed that it escapes the pull of gravity enough to remain in orbit. If the speed of the Earth is reduced then it could crash into the sun and if it is increased it could leave orbit, but that would require a large application of force like a collision with another planet.

Ignore the gravity answer. Why people guess is beyond me.
The simple answer, and one that everyone should get in their head, is that everything in the universe moves - nothing is stationary.
That means that not only is everything moving linearly (or trying to), everything is turning. Small asteroids tumble through space. Planets and stars, because they have assumed a spherical shape, spin while moving through space.
People either guess answers, or assume too much detail.
Everything in the universe moves and turns. Simple as that.

Magnetism. The north pole in Northern Canada is "MAGNETIC"!
World magnetism changes from time to time, and it's getting weak.
We could wake up someday, and find a change in the world that dwarfs global warming! .
