The Shiite will hit the fan....

Seriously...the Shiites will immediately start killing Sunnis left and right. The other nations in the region who are majority Sunni...Saudi Arabia, Egypt, everybody but Iran...will immediately get involved to protect the Sunnis.
The Kurds will get more proactive in the north trying to recover former Kurdistan land from Turkey...and Turkey will start bombing the northern Kurdish areas.

It's going to be a mess, with lots of killing....but at least none of the people dying will be American soldiers.

Davidg32 and Kari K are the only ones with any Brains.

The only thing holding Iraq together under saddam Hussein was his terror regime. His regime murdered the Kurds and the Shi’ites by the hundred thousand. It was a police state. Without the western troops and minus Saddams terror rule, the Shia and Sunni conflict will result in mayhem. Iran, a shi’ite stronghold of 70 millions will step in, and the middle East will erupt into world war, which will flow over into the African Islamic countries.

For us it will also mean a 50% cutback in oil. That would mean absolute ruin for the western economies.

Note that Al Qaida say they are quite happy to go back to a Medieval existance. Are you?

So, all you peaceniks. People like you caused tens of millions of deaths in WWII by not taking appropriate action against the Nazis while the Nazi war machine was in its infancy. Right from 1934, Hitler broke every rule that was imposed on germany after WW1, and the west allowed him to build up the greatest war machine ever before the peacniks relented and realised he had to be stopped, By then it was too late to prevent the 50 million deaths that WWII caused. If he had been stopped in 1935 or 36, it would simply have been a relatively small scuffle within Germany – thousands of lives instead of tens of millions.

Saddam was the same – he was gradually doing all the things Hitler was doing, and believe me, the utlimate aim was the establishment of an Arab Islamic state across the entire region – that would be ideal, if it was not the case that Sunni cannot live with Shi’ite and thus what would seem idealistic would result in WWIII.

The deaths in Iraq, as bad as they seem, are a microcosm of what would ensue if the forces left now.

Get real folks. Read the history, then you will know something about the region.

We will have more money to explore space, rebuild our infrastructure, invest in education and medicine, help the poor and needy, rebuild our friendships in countries which have been damaged by our invasion and occupation.

The previous answerer casually left out the most important part of the whole news story. Vietnamese responded to Bush's remarks with ire saying that the American invasion into Vietnam was part of the cause of so much unnecessary bloodshed. The whole point of the news story was to compare Bush's remarks about not pulling out of Iraq with Nixon's unwillingness to pull troops out of Vietnam when far too many American boys were needlessly losing their lives.

All of the above. Plus the Republicans at the gym will each pay me $20. We made the bet four years ago, and I'm still right.

This is not my opinion. According to TV reports, President Bush said, "What happened in Vietnam after the U.S. pulled out will happen again."
