Space is called space because there nothing in it in the first place (that is, between objects). Now, there is a zone that is actually pretty much empty, no galaxies for a fairly long distance. It is just like when you make chocolate chips cookies and one of them happens to have zero chip in it.
It happens. It is a not great cookie, but there is no danger, it will not "contaminate"other cookies, will it?
That "void" has been there for billions of years. Didn't hurt us, did it? And it is 8 billions light years away.

The only holes in the Universe are black ones and they are not going to kill us anytime soon.
Yes, there are more black holes than we ever thought.
Yes, there is a super massive black hole at the center of our galaxy, the Milky Way, but currently it is dormant.
Yes, we are on collision course with the Andromeda Galaxy in a few billion years.
Yes, our sun is middle aged and will die in 7 billion years or so.
Yes, most of the matter and energy of the universe is missing, but it is hiding from us as dark matter and dark energy and it may be actually normal matter hiding in a higher dimension.
But, all these threats are far removed. We are in the outskirts of the Milky Way far from the super massive black hole inside the core, and last I heard the nearest black hole is 61 light years away from us.
If you work in a war zone you don’t worry if you will get hit by a speeding automobile, you worry about the bullet or the artillery shell headed your way. You are forgetting about the war around us and worrying about getting hit while crossing the street.
If you are going to need something to worry about then worry about something that can and will happen soon, not billions of years from now.
- The asteroid Apothos is going to miss us in the year 2026, but it will come closer to earth than our weather satellites. There is a 1 in 45,000 chance it might swing around and hit us in 2036. But, a comet or asteroid could be discovered tomorrow that is on a collision course with the earth and we will get hit by one that was as big as that which killed the dinosaurs; that’s a 100% chance. Some comets we don’t detect until they are inside the orbit of the earth, which would be too late.
- Yellowstone is sitting on top of a mega-volcano and it is over due for an eruption.
- The bird flu could have been as bad as the 1918 Spanish Flu that killed 55 million Americans. Ever flu season a new flu virus could crop up that we don’t have a cure for, the avian flu killed over 75% of the people it infected.
- Global Warming is real, if it is man made or not, it is being made worse by man and the US government has its eyes blindfolded shut on the issue.
- Terrorists do want to attack the US and war in Iraq is only increasing the odds. The chances are that it won’t be international terrorists, but the homegrown ones as happened in the last 3 major terrorist events targeting the US.

Not to worry, a hole would be an empty space, in astronomy these spaces are called voids, the large ones exist between great walls of galaxies in the far distance, they pose no threat to anyone. Sleep easy, you are safe.

There really isn't any point in being scared about something (or nothing as in this case) that is so far away that even at the speed of light it would take billions of years to get here (if it was even moving in this direction, which it isn't).

Space is continuous over it's entirety, there can be no gaps, this even excludes black holes.
It can diminish in density to a minimum then it goes out of existence.
