How did my friend with a perfect GPA and SAT score get rejected from Yale, but my friend with a 3.6 GPA and 2100/2400 SAT score get accepted?
Both pretty much did the same thing when it came to extracurriculars, and community involvement. And they both applied last year.

The top schools do not pick the students with the best grades & SATs and work their way down. Instead, they pick those that are qualified & then sift through them to get an interesting mix of students whom they believe will accept them. All the top schools reject lots of people who are qualified.

Many will reject very qualified students whom they think will go elsewhere to increase their yields. Yale may have thought your friend woud get accepted at Harvard or Princeton and would reject them. My rejecting her, they increase their yield.

It could be any number of things:
1) Quotas of women/men
2) Quotas of ethnic groups
3) Someone knew one of them, for positive or negative
4) They went to differently-rated high schools
5) One wrote a better application letter
6) Some colleges don't want the "perfect--nerds" but want the "all-around normal guy--types"
7) The luck of the draw! One application was reviewed on a Monday morning, the other late Friday night.

Who knows??

Yale wants "well rounded" students. It is likely that your friend with the lower grades wrote a more convincing college entrance essay.
