i worked in a sandwich shop and we tossed lots of food. there was a hungry man outside and we weren't allowed to give it to him. (liability).......so we wouldset it inboxesj out back on top of a table. they would have to scavenge. they eat, we waste less and it's legal. for us not the scavenger.

Depends on the employees working at the place. I worked at an "Arby's" and at "the Original Cookie" during college.
At "the Original Cookie" - cookies could actually be kept for 24 hours - but the goal was to never have more than 6 of each type cookie left over at night. I was there for about 2 years and we only threw away about one dozen cookies a week. The goal at Arby's was also to NOT have any waste - or left overs. Everything is made to order and items are cooked according to trend - we kept track of sales and then used that as a guide of how many potaotes to bake or roast beef to have cooked etc. And it was our goal to have No customer order errors (sandwich made wrong) - I generaly saw about 2-4 potatoes thrown out a week and maybe a basket full of fries (if you added it up all week) and about 4-8 sandwiches (depending on the week) - so it was not too bad.
Our store also had a policy - to further reduce waste - if a sandwich was made in error - it would be set aside and employees could purchase that sandwich for 1/2 price plus their employee discount - so that cut down waste too.
Basically, the better the management and staff - the less waste.

As for why we throw away a good sandwich that may have been made wrong is honestly for safety. Think of it this way, if I gave another customer your sandwich in error and gave you there sandwich and then switched them, but both of you touched them. Would you still want it? You have opened this package and touched this sandwich with your hands and then you want me to take that sandwich and give it to another customer. Plus with society today who knows what taht person could have done with that sandwich. This is a health regualtion for the safety of our customers. I worked at McDonalds as a manager and breakfast waste was my responsibility. I had very little, I watched and monitored my grill very close and as a result I had less waste and fresher food. But that never seemed to happen once I left the store. On the rare times that I was there through lunch I would be in the grill I would monitor the cabinets and not let the crew fix the amounts that they want. This was another way of monitoring waste. I do know that a lot of places are able to donate there unused prepared foods to the food banks, but some cannot because of the nature of the food. If I had anything left over, I would count the waste but then let the crew eat it so that at least it was not being thrown out. Good Luck

Sadly more than people realize. If extra was made, and not sold-instead of allowing a employee to eat or take it home it is thrown out. Unless maybe the manager is okay with it, but that is usually not the case. And the food that is say 1 day past the expiration, I'm talking stupid stuff like buns, and things that are considered "fresh" until the date, nothing that would harm anyone if consumed they are tossed in the dumpster. I myself feel like hey the people at the soup kitchen could care less if the bread was a day older than fresh, and would enjoy a nice burger even if it was cooked more than 10mins ago. Just my opinion!

I worked at McDonald's about a year ago..and i only worked in the evening a few times there, and i don't remember what we did, but now i work at Captain D's and normally..depending on the manager..whatever is left over at the end of the night we divie up and take home..but some actually make us throw it out..but normally with that manager she makes sure we wait to cook the food the last hour we're open so we're not throwing too much away..normally just a handful of fries and a few pups is all that's thrown away..not sure about other places tho.

It is horrible what these fast food places throw away. If you order a sandwich with no mayo and they give you one with mayo and you return it untouched, they throw it out. It makes me sick that they just cant give you what you want and let you keep the sandwich that they messed up as long as the claim is legitamit. Every time I eat at a fast food resturant they mess something up either mine or someone else in line and they throw it away. Mcdonalds is the worst. There is a local pizza place that gives their slices that have been sitting around for 20 mins or so to kids instead of throwing them out (they are kept under a warmer). The amount of food wasted every year from fast food places (90% of it being perfectly edible) could feed small starving countries.

Guessing, probably none because they are not allowed any wastage, havent you ever had a burger that had been smothered in mayo and ketchup? well that is the one that they burnt, dropped on the floor that you just ate! LOL
Think about it ?

But having read other posts there may bea high percentage- absoltute waste!

The choice is yours so you decide?

Yes, and I asked several, why not open a serving line and feed the homeless, instead of tossing. The reply? "The health department won't allow that"

Do what!!? The health department allows you to feed it to paying cutomers, but will not allow someone down on their luck the same food???!!!!

At a properly run place the amount of waste is very little to none. This is due to proper training of employees and good management.
