Philosophy is a part of my life, it's who I am, and I love it, and would love to pursue it in college as my major and earn a doctorate.

For a job, I want to do something directly involving philosophy, primarily as a college professor or writer, although I am open to other suggestions.

My main concern, would be financially. Writers have it hard just as writers, especially when first starting out to get published and read. To teach at a College, I would need my doctorate, but to get that, I need money to pay through tuition and living expenses. Although, I don't need a lot of money, I live a frugal life.

Would I have to accept a general job that requires simply a bachelors degree? I have a slight interest in computers as a programmer, but I am self-taught.

Philosophy will equip you to deal with the poverty, unemployment, and rejection that a philosophy degree will bring you- you'll be poor but OK with that.

That's not a bad way to go, actually- it's a lot less work than buying into our materialistic way of life and working til you drop in order to buy an even larger digital television to put in your pool house...

Or you could become a politician. But that's no place for an honest man.

The best place for you is in self-employment- some kind of consultant or motivational speaker, perhaps.

Or maybe a televangelist? oops, see politician, above.

You shouldn't have to pay tuition for your doctorate. Most programs offer teaching assistantships to all or at least some of their students. These come with a (small, but enough to live on frugally) stipend and free tuition. Do what you love and tune out the obnoxious relatives telling you it's not a "real" job.

You don't get a PhD for the money. You get it because you can't not get it. Unless you are a professor in one of the professional schools, the money is not great. But the money is OK and the lifestyle is incredible.
