Hello! :] I'm finishing up a summer project for one of the courses I'll be taking this semester, and I was wondering, what are some coming of age ceremonies? I need at least seven.

(That doesn't mean each person who answers needs to list seven, either. :] )

Please, and thank you very much!

In the Catholic church, a child's first communion and confirmation mark his or her entry into the community as an "adult" (having reached "the age of reason").

In Judaism, a bar mitzvah ("son of the Law") at the age of 12 is when a boy "becomes a man" and can be counted among the 10 men needed to hold a religious ceremony. A similar ceremony for a girl is called a bat mitzvah ("daughter of the Law").

Very young children can undergo a rite of passage as well. Christian children can be baptized or christened. Jewish boys are circumcized. (A piece of their foreskin is removed as a visible sign that they have been dedicated to the service of God.)

Graduation from college or university is a rite of passage. So is marriage, since married persons usually leave home and establish themselves as distinct and separate from their parents.

In aboriginal (native) cultures, a vision quest is a rite of passage (looking for your totem, hunting and killing your first animal).
