Sounds like it may be an insect, but what kind?

well, there are a number of insects that make noise and you could very well be hearing all of them. There is the Cicada, Locust, and Crickets.

Pine Borers(sp) They make a humming sound that makes you think there is an electrical problem around the telephone poles. They get into the trees around your house, especially pine trees and make holes.

I'd say it's probably locusts.
