Steve Jobs is the CEO of Apple but he did not invent the iPod.

The iPod wasn't really an invention, since there were many other mp3 players around before its conception. People at Apple felt that the mp3 players on the market weren't that great so they decided to develop something more user friendly.

Apple's hardware engineering chief, Jon Rubinstein, assembled a team of engineers to design it, including Tony Fadell, hardware engineer Michael Dhuey, and design engineer Jonathan Ive, with Stan Ng as the marketing manager. The product was developed in less than a year and unveiled on October 23, 2001.

The name iPod was proposed by Vinnie Chieco, a freelance copywriter, who (with others) was called by Apple to figure out how to introduce the new player to the public.

MP3 was invented by a team of European engineers Philips, CCETT, IRT and Fraunhofer Society, who worked in the framework of the EUREKA 147 DAB digital radio research program. You can read more about that here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MP3

The first digital audio player in the world was created by South Korean SaeHan Information Systems in 1997.

A Top honour for iPod designer
Design for Industry graduate, Jonathan Ive, has won a coveted award for engineering excellence.

Jonathan Ive won the Royal Engineering Academy's President's Medal, which is given on an ad-hoc basis to people or organisations who have made specific contribution to promoting excellence in engineering.

Ive is now Vice-President of Industrial Design with Apple. He designed the iMac computer and the iPod MP3 player.

The iPod is the world's biggest selling portable digital music player. More than 35 million will have been sold by the end of this year.

You can't say "don't say apple or ipod" because the ipod is just that...an APPLE device. and if you want a specific name then Steven Jobs. He is the CEO of Apple so naturally the "invention" of the ipod(which in a sense it hasn't been invented because it's still just a version of an mp3 player, which have been around for awhile now)would be credited to him. But as others have said since it was made by apple it would have been a collarboration amongst several designers and mechanics and otherwise. so please if you want a specific name then go with Steven Jobs, but in reality if it's a corporate product then there is no single contributing person.

Apple - iPod put Apple back on the map.

MP3 : It was invented by a team of European engineers at Philips, CCETT (Centre commun d'études de télévision et télécommunications), IRT and Fraunhofer Society, who worked in the framework of the EUREKA 147 DAB digital radio research program, and it became an ISO/IEC standard in 1991.

Steven Paul Jobs (born February 24, 1955) is the co-founder and CEO of Apple and was the CEO of Pixar until its acquisition by Disney.[2] He is currently the largest Disney shareholder[7] and a member of Disney's Board of Directors. He is considered a leading figure in both the computer and entertainment industries.[8]

Jobs' history in business has contributed greatly to the myths of the quirky, individualistic Silicon Valley entrepreneur, emphasizing the importance of design while understanding the crucial role aesthetics play in public appeal. His work driving forward the development of products that are both functional and elegant has earned him a devoted following.[9]

Together with Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak, Jobs helped popularize the personal computer in the late '70s. In the early '80s, still at Apple, Jobs was among the first to see the commercial potential of the mouse-driven GUI.[10] After losing a power struggle with the board of directors in 1985, Jobs resigned from Apple and founded NeXT, a computer platform development company specializing in the higher education and business markets. NeXT's subsequent 1997 buyout by Apple brought Jobs back to the company he co-founded, and he has served as its chief executive officer since his return.
