Honey, go for it. Get your degree and prove them wrong!
You are NOT too old to better your life. A nursing degree will open up a lot of opportunities for you. There is a shortage of qualified nurses all over the country.
Getting this job will help you in the long run. The benefits are greater.
It's hard work, but you can do it!

Start a nursing degree.
No one is too old to improve themselves
My mom right now is just starting her nursing degree and she is 43 years old
Do it now while you still are young and work hard at it.
There are a lot of community colleges that offer nursing degrees.
So becoming a nurse doesn't really mean that you have to go to a really expensive university.

I'm afraid your answerers may be missing the point...many vocational course such as Nursing, Social Work etc DO apply an upper age limit to entrants...I know someone who was turned down as they felt she would not be "good value" as her career would be so short.
If the "people" telling you that you are too old, are the Entrance Officers for your course, then there's nothing you can do...if it's just your friends and family....sod 'em...go find out if you can do it. Remember places are heavily oversubscribed on BA Nursing degrees so they can afford to be choosy.

Go and do it love! There is a book called What Should I Do With My Life by Po Bronson, and it has alot of people in it in the same situation as you. Read it and be inspired, it should be on sale in your local bookstore. And why are you too old? It's not that you are too old, it is because these people do not want you to make something of yourself, in case you make them look bad. Ignore them and and become a success. Do the degree.

Don't listen to these people. If you want to start a nursing degree, go ahead. Only you can prove them wrong.
Good luck.

Nothing - just do it and tell them all to go jump. Your satisfaction on completion will be immense - and you can rub the smug joy in their faces!
Also, you're 39, I assume you've seen some things in your lifetime and have general life experience. I'd say that counts for a lot, especially compared to a teenage/20-something trainee who no doubt still has their head up their backside!

Just bloody do it and prove them all wrong - because if you don't even try you'll always regret it! I'm talking from experience - although I must confess I never wanted to do nursing so I take my hat off to you - just DO IT. I'll come to your party when you graduate!
Best of luck xxx
