Hi! I live in a very old house (200+ years) and I would love to know some specific history about it (maybe who lived here, what the house used to look like, how the surrounding land was, anything). I haven't the slightest idea where to begin to look, so any and all suggestions are appreciated! Thanks! :-)

Go down to your county tax records office or just check out the information included with your deed. You might be able to research the individuals that lived there in the past through those tax records and the library. I know my public library has a place you can search newspaper archives......Good Luck

First, ask any neighbors that have lived in the neighborhood for a while. They might know previous owners, and could get you in touch with them. You may even get pictures this way.

Then go to the County Recorder's office and ask for a list of previous owners. There may be some still living that you could find and talk to.

Once you have names of owners from long ago, you can look on a website like ancestry.com and see if you can find posterity of these people. Locate them and see if they know anything and are willing to talk. It might be nice to invite them to come over and see their ancestors' home.

If your house is 200yrs old ? then it should have an
Abstract, this is a record of every one who has owned it, starting from when the Gov, issued the land to the first owner,
one of the owners may still have it,
[they don,t do that any more] i still have mine that was issued in 1814 it list,s all the owners from mr William conner, deeded in 1814 to the day i purchased it,
county clerk will have a record of owners,

I am in agreement with the other poster.

If you are interested in spending lots of time and doing some digging around, here are several websites that can help you too:
