Just to stoke the fire a little, I'm curious as to how many support the ban or are opposed to it. I don't want long winded justifiction for your opinion either, a simple "Yes I support it" or "No I don't" will suffice. We are being purely scientific now and I would like to see how much the community is divided on this subject.

Molly - try not to get your panties in a wad - I meant scientific as in numbers and statistics. Now I shall retreat back to my mad scientists lab - duh? Why can't people ask a simple question without all the personal attacks and snide comments?

I'm going to wait until tomorrow and then tot up the numbers, for and against and will let you know.

Before I close the question, there were 25 against slaughter and 22 supporting it. However I did notice that the hardcore users of the board were the ones that agreed that slaughter houses filled a real need. The majority of those against any form of slaughter were mainly people that were infrequent visitors to the board.

i don't support the ban, slaughter is necessary in the horse industry.

I don't know that a GOOD answer can be "yes" or "no" -- one must look at all aspects of the argument.

I think that regulated slaughter is more humane than starvation.

That doesn't mean that the horrid 'still alive and bleeding out' slaughter is ok-- its N-O-T!!

But the correct euthanisation and processing of horses is a better option.

Of course, the BEST option is to control the horse population to limit the number of horses in teh world-- why ?? Well with hundreds of thousands of horses at auctions each week and going to slaughter houses, our only option is to limit the number of horses bred each year-- this will lower the number of 'unwanteds' and then make slaughter virtually uncessary

Until we get society to a point where horses are considered 'family' and not 'expendable' then we will always have a bigger supply than demand. So how does society dispose of something they don't need? They find a new market for it -- in this case, slaughter is the market for horses.

Wrong? yes. Inevitable? Yes.

The ULTIMATE answer to your question is that I am neither for nor against-- I am both.

I am against INHUMANE slaughter. And I am FOR slaughter instead of abuse or starvation.

At the end of the day, I'd much prefer to see the number of horses bred yearly reduced -- it makes more long-term sense for the industry.

i am not for it , i know you dont want a long answer but i just wanna say something , i asked a question about slaughter also and people got me kinda torn , what they said was by shutting it down your hurting the horse more

I just wish noone ever started slaughter in the first place ,
i know that some horses are sick when they go in but whats wrong with just putting them down if they are unwell ?? its less painful .

I LOVE HORSES , i wish they didnt have to suffer when they are not sick and deserve a second chance. but by shutting factories in the u.s horses in pain have to travel more and there they suffer more cuz its way worse what they do to horses in mexico. this is a half way situation for me but im leaning a bit more on the No slaughter side.

Yes, I would support it if it were regulated better...transport, make sure the actual deed is very quick/humane. But I do wonder about the people that eat these animals that many times are drugged up and full of medications that are not approved for human consumption... But better to die quickly than be starved and neglected and die a slow painful death.

That said, I do believe there are better ways to deal with unwanted horses...more careful breeding programs, people who will geld their fugly colts, a better(less costly and less invasive) way to spay mares so that poor quality mares cannot reproduce to supply the kill-pens, euthanasia, donating to hunts/zoos for animal food. So much for being a straight answer...

In an ideal world I would be completely against it. But in today's world I think that instead of banning it altogether, they could have passed stricter laws regarding the treatment of animals sent to slaughter, and make sure that the laws were followed.

Yes, I am for opening up the slaughter market again for reasons that I have stated in other post. And that is just what this country needs is more government regulations....maybe the ones we already have just need to be enforced.

LOL don't get your panties in a wad thats funny
I hate saying this cause we do rescue but I have nothing against slaughter. I'm opposed to how they are treated at auction, thru transport and at the plant and the means of how some do it :(

I'm half and half on this one.

I am against the inhumane ways of slaughtering, but I'm for the humane way. I'd rafter die in a slaughter house with humane methods instead of sitting in stall or pen, dieing of malnourishment and dehydration.

----------------------------------------------------------
Just wanted to add...

I was a news report on youtube about a man who loaded all his stallions in one trailer and one mare. Did anybody see that? I'll see I can find it again...

im half and half on this one, i am for slaughter some what because i rather animals suffer for a few moments then dying of malnutrition or many other countless diseases that come with neglect at a backyard breeder. i definetly dont support the inhumane methods of slaughtering the animals but if they could improve the conditions of slaughter houses i am sure me and many others that are on the fence about horse slaughter, will be content.

For, but not as it stands. Needs better regulations for humane treatment. I bet people in India wish we wouldn't slaughter cows.
