As far as I know, the only issue might be with county (or local) zoning ordinances/laws. In this situation I would think that the 'zoning police' would only get involved if someone makes a complaint, unless the lot happens to be in town or in a development. If it's out in the middle of nowhere there shouldn't be an issue. Besides, you could always argue that you are doing a site study and are involved with helping the owner with building a renewable energy / self-sufficient home.

If you are renting the lot, the only bar would probably come from county or municipal ordinances. You will need to check the website in the locaility where the alleged tent may be. Zoning laws may also prove to be a bar again check the local, not State, laws.

1. Try to use a different set of words to describe putting up a tent next time.
2. If you own, or are renting the lot than it is perfectly legal to set up a tent on the lot and live in it.

If you have permission from the owner you still must obey local laws in that area. Even if the state does not, the city or county may have laws against tent camping on the property.
You need to check into these laws.

I think you can if you say you are protesting something or say you are an illegal alien. In the case of protesters, I think you can argue free speech (you can camp in the park across the street from the White House if you are protesting something). In the case of illegal aliens, in Maryland they can do just about anything illegal and not be arrested.
