My neighborhood has about 5 routers on channel 6 and that is what my channel is. My guess is that is why I'm losing connection it used to work great a week ago
Also if this is the problem, how do I change the channel?

Change your channel to 11, and you are suffering from Interference and bleed over from the other routers being on the same channel.
type in 192.168.1.1 This opens your router utility.

Your pc/laptop should connect to the strongest wireless signal. If you are going through several walls in your home or at the other end of the house/in the basement where the router is on the second floor, then you may have a very weak signal. Your options are to reposition your router to a more centralized location, or to encrypt the router and your pc so that the pc can only talk to your router. The problem here is that it sounds like you have a weak signal to the outer and that is why you're bouncing to other connections. The first option is the best.

It could be the channel or it could be a 2.4Ghz cordless phone that is causing the interference. Maybe not in your house but from a neighbors.

To change the channel of your router, check out the web configuration utility that most WiFi routers have and it is usually the IP address of the router. (192.168.X.X or something like it.)

On your computer go to START, RUN, type CMD and hit ENTER. On the window that opens up type IPCONFIG and hit ENTER, this will show you your machines IP address for your Ethernet (wired) and Wireless network card in this case. Look for the GATEWAY, that is the IP of your router.

Enter that into your browser (http://192.168.X.X)

It might require a password, if you don't have it consult your router's documentation or contact their tech support.
