Well, no, you are not retarded! Mental retardation is marked by low intelligence; an IQ of less than 85. Now obviously I haven't given you an IQ test that shows your score, but it is (probably) safe to assume you are at least of average (IQ at least 100) intelligence, based on your writing style and ability to think things through rationally.
You my dear, are just one that wants to believe that people are generally nice and have good intentions, therefore, you do not realize when someone is being rude until after the conversation. Perhaps you subconsciously do know it is rude, but you consciously choose not to say anything at the time- a behavior or personality trait known as being passive. You need to learn to become more assertive, not to be confused with aggressive. Assertiveness means confronting someone when they are being rude, but not being rude back to them. You would hold your ground, but you wouldn't say something rude back just to get even- that would be taking the aggressive approach. If this is a serious problem for you, you could consider seeing a psychologist who can train you in assertiveness skills.

I don't know if you're slow or just gullible or something. To help with something like this, you have to make your brain smarter. The best way is to keep it actice. Do things that require your brain to think. Reading has been proven to increase response time and smartness (not just knowing answers to things). It's like if you go to work and come home just to sit in front of the tv all night long. You'll be out of shape and not very healthy. If you come home from work and exercise and be active, you'll be in shape, healthy, looking and feeling good. Your brain is the same way. By reading, it makes your brain work to understand and interpret what is being read. It can be anything, just as long as you read.
There are also supplements that can help. Over the counter supplements that increase the energy of your brain. My wife used to take a medicine called Ginkgo Biloba. It healps with alertness and increasing your brain's activity. It's not an over night helper, but take it each day as it says and after a couple of weeks you should see an improvement.
Lastly, exercise and a healthy diet are always encouraged. Anyone in the medical field will tell you that exercise and a healthy diet help you think better, be more alert, and whatnot. Hope this helps.

Mmh... i know what you mean, i have the same problem. Just with the people who are rude, not all. It's just that since i'm not expecting rude comments from others. I don't think we're 'retarded', we're just too damn nice!
I think it can be solved by trying on purpose to find something rude with everything that these people say. Be on the defensive all the time. Although that to me is very tiring... if i don't 'get' the rude comment, I'll just let it slide, or laugh it off.
I think we shouldn't worry too much that these kind of people think we're retarded. They're the ones that are childish and rude, and that's far worse.

Sweetness, You can't be too nice, but you can be too rude. Apparently the people you know are too rude. Just ask God to help them to learn to be nice!!! Don't worry about thinking of things to say back rude to them. Continue to be as nice as you can all your life and the Lord will bless you! sometime people do take advantage of people like us, but I personally prefer to keep on being nice. Also we can be a little naive, but wisdom comes with age. Pray much. Trust the Lord and do good! Purpose good in your heart and all will be well with your soul! You are NOT retarded or dumb. The Bible says it is good to be slow to anger so slow is good. Just pray like a house afire and everything will be okay!!! Sending you all my hopes for you to succeed in life. Lord bless you.

I suspect it's more a case of not listening. Why are they saying the rude things in the first place? That's the real question. Try really listening to what others say--not thinking about your response, but actually hearing what they say and giving it some thought. You'll respond more clearly, be a better part of the conversation and realize and understand more of what is being said to you. The problem will solve itself. Remember--it isn't about you. It's about what they are saying TO you that counts.

Dear Worried, I can so relate to your current awareness. I went to a new friends house for dinner, and they enjoyed a dry sense of humor that I just don't get. I think it just shows that we all have different personalities. I have choosen friends who speak kindly. If you have to be around someone who is rude, it is not you who is slow, it is them for not realizing how inappropriate their way of communicating is.You are not slow, you are just a kind person who doesn't think the way they do.

Anger is a healthy emotion as long as it's controlled. It sounds like you need to get a little angry when people treat you rudely. Your anger will help you defend yourself and therefore feel stronger and more self assured. Try it. Don't let anyone talk down to you.

THERE'S NO SENSE OF PEOPLE CALLING EACHOTHER RETARDED OR SLOW. AND THEY JUST LIKE USING THAT WORD AND DON'T KNOW WHAT THE F*CK IT MEANS.
WHAT PI**ES ME OFF IS I GET OFFENDED WITH THE WORD "RETARDED" BECAUSE IT'S A PREJUDICE
THING TO SAY TO OTHERS. AND I DON'T LIKE HEARING PEOPLE SAYING IT.
LIKE KIDS IN SCHOL. NON-HANDICAPPED KIDS LIKE TO MAKE FUN OF KIDS WITH DISABILITY BECAUSE THEY SOMEWHAT HAVE MENTAL RETARDATIONS.
SAME THING AS BEING IN A SLOW CLASS AND PARTICIPATING IN A SPECIAL OLYMPICS.
ALL I SEE THIS YEAR OLD 12 YEAR OLD KID GETTING PICKED UP BY A HANDICAPPED BUS AND THE NEIGHBORS CURSE AND LAUGHS AT THE KID AND CALLS HIM "RETARDED" , THIS IS SOME EVERYDAY SH*T HE HAVE TO GO WITH NOW BECAUSE I FEEL SORRY FOR THAT POOR KID. AND HIS PARENTS DON'T DO NOTHING ABOUT IT CUZ ALL THEY DO IS SIT ON THEIR LAZY A** DOWN ON THE COUCH AND DON'T DO NOTHING ABOUT IT.
WAKE UP, AMERICA, IT'S GOD WHO TO BLAME. HE'S DOING THIS BECAUSE WE'RE BEING PUNISHED. WE ALL SINNED.GOD DOESN'T GIVE A DAMN.
