I'm gay... I miss her like a hole in the head! She spearheaded campagnes against progression, demonising gay-friendly institutions like Gay News. I don't believe in hell, but I sincerely hope the ***** is rotting there.

Mary Whitehouse was disliked. Mainly she was an unelected busy-body who saw it as her personal business to try and do something about stopping the sex industry here in UK; prostitution, porn, that sort of thing.
Well, prostitution is not a crime in UK and has never been illegal. What is illegal is for a prostitute to solicit - that is, to stand on a street corner looking for 'trade'. She can however advertise in a shop window using coded language, such as, 3rd Floor French Lessons, or some such.
It is illegal for a man, a pimp, to run a prostitution racket and it is illegal for a 'madam' to do same. But, as they say, it happens and will continue to happen.
Mary Whitehouse was, as you say, a joke. Good riddance.
Let's be honest, here in UK the subject of prostitution is not a vote catcher, so any politician who wants to deal with this, is not going anywhere fast. Just lay off and try something else.

She was more right than wrong. True, she was self appointed, but then who voted in the left leaning BBC to speak on our behalf, together with all the various pressure groups and quango members that they invite into their studios.
Mary Whitehouse became increasingly outraged at the trend she could see developing in the country. I don't know what she would have thought about the 'left' wanting to hand the country over to the EU?

I'm living in the USA now, but I do remember Mary Whitehouse. I didn't always agree with her, but her logic was impeccable, she stuck to what she believed in and she was good at getting her point across. Every country and every generation needs a Mary Whitehouse, just to keep the rest of us on our toes.

Mary Whitehouse, LOL, yes I guess I think of her a lot these days, she had some faults but in general she was a good person, at least when Mary and her censoring was around, she gave children the chance to be children, unlike the mostly parent-less children of today's society who are lost in the tsunami of today's uncensored corruption.

She was no worse from the American censors who support violent cartoons for kids but get enraged when Janet Jackson shows some breast - all complainers generally apply a minority personal ideology rather than majority public opinion to their target.

The Grandmother of the PC Brigade? No, I don't miss her. It's thanks to her that minority groups in this country discovered that they could, with nothing more than the right marketing and with no socially agreed remit, cause their will to be imposed without general consultation on the majority.

No way, She was a self appointed spokesperson elected by no one and answerable to no one. She brought her oppressed background and Victorian standards to a modern audience. The media gave her a platform and she appeared to speak for millions of people who had never given her a remit to do so.
