For action/adventure, you can't beat Terminator, Aliens, Predator, Highlander, Conan the Barbarian, and Batman.

For 80's comedies, Better Off Dead with John Cusack is a must if you have a taste for absurd, oddball humor. Airplane!, Caddyshack, and the first Ghostbusters movie are keepers. I'd also suggest Planes, Trains, and Automobiles with Steve Martin and the late John Candy.

If you want a little romance, Romancing the Stone (Michael Douglas) is a fun movie, and Vision Quest (Matthew Modine Linda Fiorentino) is a very sweet coming of age story. Body Heat isn't exactly a romance in the typical sense, but it is an excellent - and very steamy - film noir/murder mystery film.

For drama, there's Platoon, Scarface, Wall Street, and Full Metal Jacket, for starters. Bad Boys with Sean Penn and Esai Morales (not the later 90's movie with Martin Lawrence) is a very gritty, very well done movie about life in juvenile lockup.

If you like old school horror, Nightmare on Elm Street is an 80's classic, and you might like Hellraiser. An American Werewolf in London is a comedy/horror crossover, and a great little movie.

For the full 80's "cheezy but still great fun" experience, you have to check out Red Dawn, Top Gun, The Last Dragon, and the raunchy comedy Bachelor Party (with a very young Tom Hanks).

Finally, for epic, Oscar-worthy fare from the 80s, I'd go with the following, Raging Bull, The Last Emperor, and Empire of the Sun.
