Try Gerbera Daisies. They're inexpensive to grow yourself and they have a long shelf life in a flower arrangement. They're also sturdy and versatile. Remember to include plastic tubes over the stems of Gerberas because they continue to grow long after they've been cut and placed into a flower arrangement. Leather leaf fern is one of the most popular and versatile choices for greenery. Good luck to you.

carnations! mums! both fairly inexpensive and you can tint them to whatevr color you choose.
simply add a drop or two of food coloring to the water they are in and the flower will change color!
daisies and freesia are fairly inexpensive as well.
and for greenery use greenery out of your garden! whether it be from a small shrub, tree, or wild growth, its free and works well!
have fun with your flower arranging.

The ferns from asparagus are beautiful for greenery as well. I also use boxwood for greenery. As far as flowers, carnations last very well.

Babys breath is a great gap filler. (It's those sprigs of little white flowers) Also daffidols are cheap when in season, and Iris's last for a long time when cared for.
Palm fronds cut to size and shape are great behind flowers in a vase.

They don't come much cheaper than the next door neighbours garden. Or, if you are looking for something a bit more exotic, check out the local botanical gardens :)
