What is your goal? Fun or investment.

Fun - try the state quarters and presidential dollars. Many can be found in circulation. Ask your bank for rolls of both and check through them, keep what you need for your collection, turn the rest back in for another roll and so forth.
Buy a coin album - a book that the coins fit into - many available for state quarters and presidential dollars.

Many folks collect cents - NOT PENNIES! Pennies are British, USA has cents! Again, get an album.

Learn about what you're collecting by buying a "Red Book of Coin Values." Borders and other book stores have them. They may have albums, too.

If for investment, learn a lot before you buy. Some coins can be purchased from the U S Mint. www.usmint.gov. These are special uncirculated or proof coins which come at premium prices.

The silver Eagle you mentioned is not a bad idea. U S Mint has been making them since 1986. Value is driven by silver bullion market. Individual coin collectors can only buy them from dealers. Mint only sells proof Eagles to individual customers.

Subscribe to Coin World. You might be able to get a copy from book store or hobby store.

It really depends on what you are interested in. Many collectors have a favorite coin design and they only focus on a single coin. Others, myself included, go for a bit of everything.

I would recommend going to the bank and going through a couple boxes of everything to see what you like. Another plus to this is that you get all of the coins for face value.

From talking to other collectors the best finds come from nickel boxes (you can get older dates because the design has been the same for so long that no one notices the old coins) and half dollars (they don't circulate well and so some boxes have a lot of silver in them).

Quarters are getting more difficult to search due to the state quarter program (bad if you are looking for silver, good if you are trying to fill an album).

Dimes and pennies are good too. You can usually pull out a few silver dimes or some wheaties. Just depends on what you want to do.
Good luck!

The basic rule is buy the book before the coin. There are all kinds of ways to collect so you need to go to a dealer and look at what is available. The Silver Eagles are more of a bullion coin than a collectible, except for the proofs. If you like history you can go for historic coins. If you want to be able to put a set of something together the Jefferson nickel set in mint state can be put together without going to the poor house. Most series has one or two key coins that stop a lot of people from finishing the set do to the expense. A thing that is becoming more popular is a type set. A 20th century type set can be done but an 18th century has some expensive coins especially in higher grades. It depends on you so look around and see what is out there and what you would like to have or accomplish. there are lots of coin collectors but very few numismatist. Yes they collect coins but also study hem and know the history behind them. Good luck in your endeavor.

I'd start with pennies because you can get a lot of different dates and mint marks with the amount you have to spend. I think it is more fun to have a lot of different pennies than perhaps a single silver dollar. Having said that, from an investment standpoint, you are better off buying the best condition coins possible since they usually appreciate the fastest, but that will limit the number you can buy since they are more expensive.

Above all, decide what will be the most fun for you and do it.
