I live in Florida. The neighbour has a live oak tree. My garden is full of shoots. Are they coming from the roots or seeds? The ground is full of roots. I have tried weedkiller but they just sprout again. Any suggestions about how to get rid of them or what to plant in the area. I gave up trying to dig the roots out. This garden has been negected for years, so I am trying to get it into shape.

Be aware that if you kill the tree by using a systemic herbicide or chopping off roots, you could be sued for the replacement value, which could be thousands for a mature tree.

You could use raised beds in wood frames, but that is expensive. Why not a ground cover of gravel or bark and a bench? A few flowers in large pots.

I've never heard of an Oak tree sprouting up from its roots- before. Usually- acorns are what produces new trees. However; if you are CERTAIN those shoots are coming from THAT tree- then your problem is that tree- Because there's NOTHING you can do to kill all those shoots-WITHOUT killing that tree, also. Can you talk your neighbor into cutting it down? (Even THEN- it may still take YEARS for all those shoots to stop coming up). Your "problem" is bigger than you realise... :(

do not use week killers you may kill your tree what you need is to make the area under the tree dark mow off the shoots then cover under the drip line in other words under the longest branches with a good mulch spread on the ground the best is a living mulch , mulch with compose in it
