I want to buy one for my mom's birthday. But it isn't until November. Can this plant be bought all year around? Or is it hard to find in November? (as that's not really the time people usually buy plans for the yards). And is there anything specific I should know before buying one? I've heard they prefer sun and moist soil. Is that correct?

They grow in Zones 5 to 7.

Yes, they will be next to impossible to find in November. There will be some shrubs available at your local nursery in early November, but only what hasn't sold. Nishiki's are "hot" this year, and they don't last long once they arrive in the nursery.

If it's possible, buy now - if you can find one, or ask your local nursery if they can find one for you. Then buy it. If you are very dedicated, you can keep it alive in a pot above ground until November, when it's time to give it to your mom. However - it may have lost all its leaves by then to get ready for winter. If you and your mom don't mind that - go for it. It can still be planted in November if the ground has not frozen - and in zones 5-7, that's highly unlikely in November. Some freezes, yes, frozen ground, no.

Don't plant this near water or sewr lines, or it's possible you and your Roto-Rooter man will be on a first-name basis. It's a willow, and will act like one. Except that it won't get as big as other willows. 4-6' generally, though unpruned, it may get to 10'.

I bought one this spring - bare root. It took a long time to establish - LOTS of fertilizer and water. If I had it to do over again, I would buy one in a pot, already growing well. Which is exactly what you can do for your MOM. Keep it somewhere where it won't freeze and plant it next spring.

OR you can just give her an IOU - in a beautiful box with a picture and a promise inside. Next spring she can go with you to pick it out herself. Way more fun. Take her to lunch on the way.

get in touch with the vendors mentioned there... Bluestone Perennials also offer it....

but the best idea is to ask your neighborhood nursery to order one for you.... might cost a little more, but the plant will be a 'fer sure'..... get to know how to care for it, too... this is one that really needs to be pruned each year so that the new growth, which is the pretty stuff, will be obvious!!...
