A mechanics Lien works kind of like a bank lien. The bank holds the title untill your loan is paid off. A mechanic can hold your vehicle untill your bill is paid off. If you don't pay the bill at all, there is a process by which the mechanic can get a legal title and ownership of your vehicle.

The previous people are correct just not thorough. A mechanics lien can be applied by anyone who does repair type work whether on your car, your home or your business. Basically if they are not paid they can put a lien against the property they worked on. In the case of a car they can hold the car for the amount owed. For a house they can have the court place an attachment against the deed which will prevent you from selling the house without paying the lien. The same applies to a business with a lien against it.

A mechanic` lien means that @ some point the car had some work done on it & the bill hasn`t been paid!
The car basically can`t be sold to anyone until this bill is paid off! Or else if you do buy the car with a lien on it you now owe someone you don`t even know money !

Mechanics lien is a lien that has been filed on your property when you do not pay someone you hired for a service. lets say you hire someone to paint your house, and then you do not pay up. The painter can go to the city file a mechanics lien on your property and let it sit there until you decide to sell or refi your property. When you do sell or refinance, then funds from your proceeds will pay off the lien in escrow.

After you have work done on your car, if you can't afford to pay for it, the mechanic can put a lien on it until the bill is paid. You can't sell that car until the lien is removed.

I want to point out that a mechanic's lien doesn't necessarily apply only to auto repairs. Building materials suppliers use them all the time to force contractors to pay money owed to the supplier, as just one example.

That is what a mechanic does when he is supposed to be working on your car. He leins against it.
