I'm 20 years old and am interested in becoming a real estate agent. Freshly shaven, my current boss kids with me that I could pass as 16. Would you feel comfortable doing business with a young person like this?
After getting the job I would hate to find that no one wants to buy a house from me because of my babyface.

No, I would not.

But that should not matter....

There are lots of different agents out there. Each targets a different market. I'm a professional in my early forties who recently looked for a single family home in an urban area. I wanted an agent who understood me and the areas in which I was looking. So I would not have wanted an agent who was a suburban housewife or a country bumpkin. But those types of agents would work for other people.

The fact that you are one of the few your age in that line of work would allow you to target a market other could not connect with. Many people in their early 20s have no idea that they could purchase a home. If I were a RE Agent and had a 20 yo customer, what would we talk about in the car? How much I remind him of his father? Yet you would naturally be able to connect.

If being a real estate agent is your calling, then do it. It will be your passion and hard work that determine your success, not your age.

Oh, and BTW, the agent I did use was almost 20 years my junior! He happened to know the area in which I was looking better than anyone else around.

I have interests in real estate at 13, so why shouldn't you? Not with the intention to track everyone down, I am obsessed with finding out the number of bedrooms, bathrooms, and square footage of the house and lot, and when the properties were built. I'll just search a town on zillow.com and browse through properties there. I wouldn't be surprised if I'm a real estate agent, but I know that I need some real training first and not just finding out how many bedrooms a bunch of random homes have. I know this is late - only eight years, come on - but I still decided to answer.

I started at 20 and had no problems. First thing that has to happen is you have to stop thinking of yourself as a kid. Grow a beard to look older, and always act professional. You may see other agents wearing khakis and Polo's, or jeans and Polo's, you cant get away with this. Always wear a shirt and tie, with dress pants and shoes. Look the part and people will trust you. Make sure you know the business inside and out, and get yourself some designations. I learned this business inside and out so when i was in a listing appointment up against other agents i would make them look foolish, same with buyers. People are looking for someone with knowledge, and if you have it they will use you no matter what your age. I work with some really dumb agents who have been around a long time. Know your business and you will be fine.

The key here is that she is family and not some stranger off the street asking to rent a room. You want to be treated fairly and you want to treat her fairly. I would suggest that you calculate the actual cost you incur with her there versus without her there and itemize those costs on paper to show your daughter. Use the actual cost to you rather than what she would have to pay elsewhere. This takes into account the "family helps family" factor. By showing her the numbers. she ought to be willing at least match it. This, of course, assumes you actually want her to live there. If for any reason, you do not want her there, just tell her. Don't create an excuse.

If you know what you are doing and are personable, it shouldn't matter how old you are.

There are some people out there that won't deal with a young person, or a woman, or a man, or someone who is a different color than they are, or someone older than them....

There will always be people who judge you based on stupid reasons. Be really good at what you do and build a business based on service; you will never have problems finding clients.

One butt whipping agent in my area started young, has a baby face too, and now owns a franchise at the ripe old age of 28. He knows his stuff, is a great marketer, and works very hard. I've called him late in the evening, on Sundays, he answers his cell or calls back promptly.

If you have the stuff, you can do it.
